Boston & Maine: An Alternate Future
Welcome to an alternate vision of the Boston & Maine Railroad. Concieved by myself and my father, the theme of our respective future HO and N scale layouts is that of a survival of the Boston & Maine Railroad into the new Millenium.
In this future, we see a Class 1 railroad that has expanded it's territory to encompass all of New England and reaching over towards and surronding the Great Lakes region to the west and as far south as Maryland. Northern territory is jointly operated with the Canadian Pacific, so it is not uncommon to see B&M SD90 MACs mixed into CP motive power running double stacks and auto racks out of Toronto as well as Detroit. Unit anthracite coal trains frequent ex-D&H trackage. Bringing much need fuel for the east coast's hungry power grids.
A great and diverse selection of classic and modern diesels operate of this venerable railroad. From old GP-7's to SD90's, this modern B&M is a railfan's dream.
Most of the models on the following pages are what I finished for my fathers N scale layout. My HO models are now in progress. The first HO engine I have completed for my own layout is a kitbash of a B&M SD26.
This is an Atlas High Hood SD24 that I chopped and added a cab and nose from a Life-Like Proto 2000 GP-20 shell. The "hump" is scratchbuilt and the piping is brass wire. SD26 kitbash plans were taken from a back issue of Model Railroader. I tried to recycle as much as possible as all the detail parts alonewould have totaled $60.00 + if one were to follow the MR article to the letter!
Below are my Dad's "Alternate Future" B&M N scale models that I painted up.
This is a Kato N-scale SD40-2 I painted for my Dad. This engine represents a commemorative paint scheme to celebrate engine 4117 a 4-8-2 R1-d class Mountain steam engine.
