Lion Brand Jiffy yarn (for adult hat) or worsted weight, sport weight or baby yarn can be used for the child's size Size F Hook. -(If you tend to crochet tightly, use a G) Pom-Pom maker or 3"x 3" piece of cardboard Note: Note: By using sport weight yarn and a smaller hook this hat can be made for in infant. Or by using a larger hook it can be used to make an adult hat
1/2 Shell: 3 dc worked in same stitch Shell: 5 dc worked in same stitch.
Ch 29 loosely, leave length for sewing. Row 1: hdc in second ch from hook, and in next 9 ch, (sk 1 ch, shell in next ch, sk 1 ch, sc in next) 4 times, sk 1 ch work ½ shell in last ch, ch 1 turn. 4 ½ shells Row 2: sc in first dc, (shell in sc, sc in 3rd dc of shell) 4 times, skip 1 dc in next, hdc in last 10 hdc, ch 1 loosely, turn. 4 shells Row 3: hdc in next 10 hdc, sk 1, work shell in next, (sc in top of next shell, work shell in sc) 4 times, work ½ shell in end sc, ch 1 turn. 4 ½ shells Repeat rows 2 and 3 to desired length. The best way is to take the child's head measurement and subtract 2". Work the rows until the brim (10 hdc) measures the needed length. To Finish: Sew the top of the hat first by weaving yarn in and out of the row ends. You want to pick up enough to make sure there are no holes but if you pick up too much it will be too bulky. Next start sewing at the brim, and making sure the hdc line up, continue sewing until you reach the top and fasten off. Turn hat to right side. Make a pom-pom the length and fullness desired. Attach to top of hat. If you like you can sc around the brim edge to give it a more finished look. Weave all ends in. How to make a pom-pom: Wrap yarn around a 3"x 3" piece of cardboard to desired fullness. Gently slide yarn to end holding the center, take a long length of yarn and secure it around the center. Take scissors and cut loops. Trim to make it look round. |
