'The Last
Open Road' by Burt Levy. Burt takes a hot-rod concept powered by an All-American V-8 writing style out for
a leisurely drive in the past in The Last Open Road.
Levy, who's been a mechanic, a car salesman, a motor sports reporter and an auto racer, originally self-published
this story of 1950 American road racing, his first novel, and enters the fast lane five years later with a re-edited
version from a mainstream publisher.
Through the eyes of Buddy Palumbo, a coming-of-age auto mechani in Passaic, N.J., Levy unleashes the
excitement of rich owners of MGs, Jaguars and other sporty European cars gathering to race in such sites as Watkins
Glen, N.Y., and Elkhart Lake, Wis. The story line is stuck in second gear for the first half of the book, and nongearheads
could stall out on the high-octane car talk. But the final chapters' fast pace and Buddy's likability make this
Road a winner.
