WILLIAM1 CANADY, SR. was born Abt. 1795 in Tennessee or Virginia, and died Abt. 1839 in Davidson County, Tennessee. He married ELIZABETH ELLISTON December 21, 1820 in Davidson County, Tennessee, daughter of WILLIAM ELLISTON. She was born Abt. 1801 in Tennessee, and died Abt. 1839 in Davidson County, Tennessee. (Not yet proven) died 1839 Source: Federal Census Records, obtained by Audie Canida Henry's brother John Jackson Canada lived until 1927, which meant he was issued a death certificate. I obtained this record and it listed him as born in Davidson County, Tennessee and his father as William. Source: John Jackson Canada Death Certificate, obtained by Audie Canida While researching John's line in Texas County, Missouri, I contacted John's grandaughter, Janice Bales, Janice and I talked about the family for a long time and she directed me to her neice, Judy Golden John's great grandaughter. John's daughter Emma (Janice's mother & Judy's grandmother), told Judy that John had told her that he was born in Davidson County, Tennessee and that his mother and father were William Canady and Elizabeth Elliston and that they died there in 1839. John said he was 8 years old when his parents died. Emma gave a list of John's siblings in birth order as follows: William, Jr., Hugh, Henry, Wash, John, Mary, & Martha. Another sibling named Sion (Sean), but no information has been found. Source: Janice Bales & Judy Golden On my copy of the 1820 census, page 105 is William Kanedy and wife ages 20-30 without children, which would be correct because they were married during the year. The 1830 Davidson County, Tennessee census has a William Canady 30- 40, wife 30-40, 3 boys under 5, 3 girls 5-10. The 1830 does not match the sibling birth order given to Emma from John, but there were probally infant deaths that he was not aware of. Died 1902 Source: Federal and State Census Records, obtained by Audie Canida Biography Hank was born in Davidson County, Tennessee. His tombstone makes his birth in 1835, but there is quite a bit of evidence that shows it is probably closer to 1828-1830. The earliest I have found records for him is in 1854 when he applied for Federal Land. On June 1, 1857, the land purchase was complete for 80 acres of land in Otter Creek Twp. (Section 21, T7N-R12W), Jersey County, Illinois. On December 17, 1856 he married his first wife Lucinda Coplin Askew in Jerseyville, Illinois. In 1861, Jersey County, Illinois, Henry was enumerated in a special census identifying men between the ages of 18 and 45 that could be drafted for military service. I have not found any concrete evidence that Henry was involved in the War between the States, but we know that his brother John joined a unit from TN, and there is a listing for a Henry S. & William J. Kennedy serving in Confederate units from Davidson County, TN. Henry and Lucinda had at least three children in Jersey County, Emma, Henry Jr., and Martha. On October 11, 1865, they were enumerated on the State Census, the next month, they moved to Blackwater Township, Saline County, Missouri and November 23, bought 120 acres (Section 4, T48-R20). Hank and Lucinda lived on this farm and had three more children, Thad, Ed, and Albert, then Lucinda died about 1872. Hank's second wife was the daughter of his neighbors Miller Thornton and Mary Jane Ross. Hank married Luraney Ellen Thornton April 21, 1873, and they had two children, Minnie and Willie while living on the same farm. On February 13, 1882, shortly after the death of Ellen's mother and the probate of her fathers farm, Henry and Ellen sold out and moved. On February 17, 1882, they purchased 120 acres of land (Section 9, T49-R23) south of Elmwood, Saline County, Missouri. Hank and Ellen lived and had seven more children, with only four surviving, Burl, Walter, Clarence, and Herman, on the Elmwood farm until February 2, 1895 when they sold and purchased 50 acres of land (Section 16, T47- R24) in Grover Township, Johnson County, Missouri. There they had two more children, Fred and Ida, but only Fred survived. On March 15, 1902, Hank and Ellen borrowed $43.20 from the Knob Noster Bank and used the farm as collateral. Hank died before the load was paid, but the load was settled March 5, 1903. Hank lived on this last farm until his death November 15, 1902. The farm is about 6 miles north of Knob Noster, Missouri on State route 32, west on County road 700 about one mile, on the North side of the road. He had a three room log cabin where at least two of his children (Ida & Fred), and one granddaughter (Nellie) were born. In 1906, four years after Henry's death, Ellen married Elmer Samuel Saylor and transferred the farm to Albert; Albert transferred it to Thad; Thad transferred it to James Burl and James Burl transferred it to Willie. In 1909 Willie transferred the farm to Logan Davis whom he had lived and worked as a farm hand according to the 1900 census, and was a close friend and neighbor of the family. Hank and Ellen are buried in the Hocker Cemetery, also on County road 700, about a mile and one half East of their home, or a quarter of a mile east of 23 highway. Source: Audie L. Canida Killed Himself Henry Canady who owned and lived upon 40 acres of land seven miles north of this city, committed suicide last Saturday morning by shooting himself with a shotgun. He was 72 years of age. Saturday morning he took the gun and started hunting. About 300 yards from the house he sat upon a knoll, first getting horse weed with which to push the gun trigger, he deliberately planted the gun at his heart and pushed the trigger with a branch of the weed. The branch broke off and he then placed the end of the weed against the trigger and the full load was discharged into his breast, killing him instantly. Coroner Bills was notified and came down on the afternoon train. He did not think it necessary to impanel a jury, but took the testimony of some of the family which showed also that it was not the old man's first attempt. Note: The news paper article lists Henry's age at 72 which would have made him born in 1830, which is closer to the ages he claimed to be in census records. CANADA-John "Uncle Jack" Canada was born Oct. 9, 1831 in Nashville, TN. He died Sept. 18, 1927 at age 95 at his home five miles north of Mt. Grove. During the late 1800s and early 1900s he owned a fish operation with huge ponds supplying fish to a large area. His enterprise was known for Miles around. He built a little shelter near the ponds to watch at night. Over the years, through good management, he acquired 1200 acres of land. He and his family lived in a big house. Part of this old home is still standing, after more than 100 years. As Mr. Canada's family grew up and married, he gave each of them 40 acres of land. As was the custom in the early days, a burial ground was nearby. He and his wife Delilah, and some of their children are buried in the family plot, located north of Mt. Grove. Uncle Jack Canada had four brothers who lived in the Mt. Grove area. John H. Canada owned a picture gallery. His ad appeared in the Mt. Grove Prospect Jan. 19, 1883, stating he would accept produce in exchange for pictures. Another brother, C.B. Canada, according to the Prospect April 8, 1883, purchased a lot in Mt. Grove as did his brother J.H. Frank Canada lived west of Mt. Grove. According to the Prospect, Upper Canada, age 61, died Oct. 25, 1882 of the fever. John Canada's first marriage was to Hannah Dawson. Six children were born: John, Julia, Delia, James, Andrew and Roseanna. After her death, he married Delilah Hunt. They had seven children: Albert. Nelson Peter, Fred, Jack, Harry, Sidney and Emma. One of their sons, Nelson Peter (Sept. 30, 1880) married Della Mae Salsman on Oct. 24, 1901. To this union ten children were born six sons, Emeral Grant, Marshall Edgar, Fred D. Warren, Paul Eugene, Joseph Dean, Nelson Duane and four daughters, Blanche Mae, Dollie, Fern Evelyn and Frances Imogene. Nelson Peter, the father died Oct. 15, 1929, as the result of a construction accident. He is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Mt. Grove. Delia Mae died April 19, 1968 and is buried beside her husband. Frances Imogene graduated from Mt. Grove High School, then married Joe Eugene Finley of near Mt. Grove on June 14, 1941. Their children are Barbara Jo Glor McCaslin and Jerry L. Finley. Barbara Jo married Jerry L. Glor, of Dallas County in 1963. Their two sons are Michael Shane and Shannon Heath, Jerry L. Finley married Jeannie Ruth Fowler of St. Louis. Their family consists of a daughter Cynthia Lynn, and a son Douglas Arthur. Cynthia married Charles Preece in 1987, and their son is Sean Alexander, (April 1, 1989). After retirement in 1985, Frances Finley returned to Mt. Grove to make her home. JOHN CANADA IS CALLED BY DEATH John Canada, or "Uncle Jack" as he was familiarly called, was born October 9, 1831, in Nashville, Tenn., and died September 18, 1927. With his passing another pioneer has gone. He moved to a farm forty-six years ago last December. That was before the railroad went through Mountain Grove. His age was 95 years, 11 months and 20 days. He was married three times; his first two wives having died. His first marriage was to Hannah Dawson. Six children were born to this union John and Julia of Mountain Grove, Delia of Jasper, James of Kansas City. Andrew and Rosanna preceded him in death. He was married the second time to Mary Shields. One child, Helen, was born to this union, who died in infancy. His third marriage almost fifty years ago was to Delila Hunt. To this union seven children were born: Albert of Oklahoma, Nelson, Emma, Fred, and Jack of Mountain Grove; Harry of Buhl, Idaho, and Sidney, who died about a year ago. There are left to mourn his departure a loving and devoted wife, ten children, who were all present except three, fifty- seven grandchildren, forty-eight great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. In his younger days he joined the Christian church. Two years ago he rededicated his life to Christ and was again baptized and joined the Free Will Baptist church, and during the four months he has been confined to his bed, he endured his suffering with, patience and lived a devoted Christian until death. Funeral services were conducted Monday morning at 10:30 at the Canada home, and he was laid to rest in the family burying ground by the side of other members of his family. From all accounts that can be learned, Kennedy had been complaining of being sick for some time. His wife had kept close watch on him and locked the door to her room, but Monday night he complained more than usual and she left the door open, so if needed she could wait on him. About 1 o'clock Tuesday morning he seized a table leg and struck her over the head a number of times, crushing her head in a horrible manner. Her screams awakened the children and they ran to the neighbors for help, but the deed was committed when they arrived. Their son George Kennedy lived close to them, but she was dead when he arrived. The officers were immediately notified and they placed Kennedy under arrest. Medical aid was summoned, but to no avail. During the day there was some talk of violence and in the afternoon Kennedy was taken to Kansas City by Constable Harry Holman and Geo. B. Kincaid, for safe keeping. The murdered woman was the mother of ten children, six of whom are living. All are single except the oldest son, George. Her maiden name was Mary Homer. She was born June 12, 1880, making her 38 years of age. Two brothers and a sister also survive her. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon, from the home of her son, conducted by Rev. King Stark. Source: The Richmond Conservator, Richmond, Missouri, May 9, 1918, provided by Ann Gorrell WIFE MURDERER GIVEN LIFE TERM THURSDAY J. H. The name Belle, I'm sure of, yes, the name Belle - I'm sure of. On a visit from our home in Fayette (Missouri) to my grandparents home in Clinton, I was a small child. Grandpa slept with 3 or 4 pillows under his head. In the night he would call "Belle are you asleep", she didn't answer immediately, even though she slept next to him. He would start a conversation by saying he wasn't sleeping very well, etc. She wasn't more than good awake until he was loudly snoring again. Poor little Grandma would get up, maybe guilt on her handmade quilt. It was on a frame, Grandpa made her that suspended from the ceiling on pulleys. When not being used, it could be lifted up out of the way. Grandpa Thad loved to fish - hunted some. On their fishing trips - while he fished, she would do her especially nice needlework. When it was time for bed, he had fixed the front seat on their Model T Ford that would lay back to join the seat of the back seat. That made their bed. So, all those years later, one of the car manufactures made the front seat that could be adjusted to a reclining position. No, Grandpa didn't get any credit for the invention! We liked to get him telling stories - some of them ghostly. He could play a rather crude version of some folk song on his fiddle, but there was rhythm. Dotty and I had to do our version of the Charleston by his music - a must! Two big American Elm tree in the front yard. Usually my Dad, Grandpa, my 2 brothers (Marion & Alvin), my sister and I would go sit in the shade until a meal was ready. Grandma would then come out to get us in. My brothers would form a seat with their hands to carry Grandma back to the house. She giggled with glee, but, I think enjoyed most the teasing she got from the neighbors over the action. He didn't like anyone in his "work shed", near the back door of the house. Here he made the knives, razors, and scissors by hand, as well as repair and sometimes guns. He would only loan tools to his next door neighbor (Dee Hammond & wife Zella). My sister and I could sit on seats he had fixed for us, so we could watch him work sometimes. He had all his tools where he knew exactly where they were, so we dared not to "touch". Perhaps the most interesting thing to watch was the forge & anvil action! They always had a big garden of vegetables, lots of flowers in the big yard. Flowers planted along the front decorative wire fence. One very black rose she grew is like none I've seen since. Of course they canned the vegetables & fruit to keep in the house basement. They grew celery, cotton, & tobacco, mostly to see how they grew. He did cure the tobacco in the upper story of the barn, garage at the back of the property. It was the only time I ate some kind of tomato preserves she made. She made the best beef, vegetable soup. She knew it was our request when there. Prepared on a big black kitchen range, in a big black pot. She took the cap of the stove off & placed the pot into the opening to cook the soup. In the kitchen corner set a big round dining table. At breakfast, Dotty and I would sit behind the table while Mom and Grandma prepared the meal. The table always had preserves, pickles, sugar, etc., with a cloth over them - of course a big cake. I liked to get a pickle to eat with a little Piece of cake, while we waited. I don't do that combination anymore! They had a table radio with many dials on it. When he sat down to listen in his favorite rocking chair and his pipe full of his home grown tobacco mixture, he would watch the radio as if he could see the people in it. Don't you know he would have enjoyed television? Source: Written by Dorothy Ancell Christian, March 12, 2001, Granddaughter of Thad & Belle Canida "T. H." Canida Dies "Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, January 20, at the Wilkinson Funeral Chapel, for Thaddeus M. ("T. H.") Canida, 84, who died some four or five years prior to his death. Mr. Canida was for many years a resident of Clinton, as he operated a knife-making business here for more than 35 years. Thaddeus Marion Canida was born March 31, near Waverly, Mo. He was wed to Isabelle Harrison on October 21, 1885, and to their union were born seven children, two whom survive. In 1900 the family moved to a house on East Elm Street, and here it was that Mr. Canida began to ply the trade at which he later became so proficient and for which he was so well known. Any kind of scrap metal--an old car bumper, part of an unused washing machine, a nondescript garden plow- -was a potential knife to Mr. Canida. Especially did his resourcefulness stand him in good stead during World War II, as he manufactured jungle knives to further the war effort. An interesting, colorful figure, Mr. Canida traveled widely over the entire nation, finally purchasing in 1924 the home at 515 Lincoln which is now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Ancell. Mr. Canida made extended visits in Clinton, staying with Mr. and Mrs. Ancell and renewing friendships of earlier years. Surviving Mr. Canida are two daughters, Miss Elsie Canida, Chicago, and Mrs. A. N. (Nellie) Ancell of 515 East Lincoln Street; a brother Albert Canada, Lexington, Mo.; two half brothers, Burl and Will Canada, Knob Noster; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a legion of friends. Mrs. Canada preceded her husband in death in 1939. The Rev. A. N. Lindsey officiated at last rites. Mrs. O. H. Hulmes and Mrs. James Peelor sang: Will there be any stars in my crown," "Will the Circle be Unbroken," and "'Till we Meet Again," with Mrs. Hulmes at the organ. Saturday, September 2. Death came suddenly from apoplexy, though she had suffered several sinking spells and apparently realized the end was near as she remarked shortly before her death that she would not be long among the living. Her health had been bad for 30 years. Susie Isabel Harrison, daughter of Kentucky forbears, was born January 28, 1869 in Kansas, just before her parents, who were in route to Missouri, crossed the line. Her people settled at Waverly, Missouri, Lafayette County. Mrs. Harrison and Thad Canida a knife maker, were married in Marshall, Mo., October 21, 1887, and for some 30 years lived in various Missouri towns and a few in Kansas. Fifteen years ago they came to Clinton to live and the children attended the Baptist Sunday School, though the parents were converted in the Church of God. Mrs. Canida was a quiet woman, devoted to her children, and enjoyed making quilts and sewing. She is survived by her husband, and two of their seven children, Mrs. Nellie Ancell of Moberly and Miss Elsie Canida of Chicago, where she is auditor in a shoe factory, who were here for the funeral. The funeral was conducted by Rev. A. S. Olsen at the Wilkinson Funeral Home at 9:30 A.M. Tuesday and the body was laid to rest in Englewood.
