Notes for JOHN A. WEATHERMAN:
  John was born in Missouri shortly after his parents
settled here.  His education was received in the primitive
log school house of those days.  He was but a youth when he
came with his parents to Taney County, then an almost
unbroken wilderness.  He was a great hunter, much of his
spare moments were spent with his gun.

  He served 3 years 6 months in the Civil War, with Battery
F, First Missouri Light Artillery, Union Army and received a
gun shot wound in his arm.   He and his family were members
of the Baptist Church and was highly esteemed in the
community, and active in the sport of all worthy measures.
He was a Staunch Republican in politics.

  He was a republican in politics.  He was City Marshall
when the city of Forsyth was incorporated.  He has also held
other positions in the city government.  James held the
following offices:

     Taney County Sheriff 1892-1896

     Taney County State Representative 1918-1920

  During the war he resided with his mother in Rolla and
attended the common school where he received a good
practical education.  After reaching mature years, he
followed farming until 1886, then he embarked in the grocery
business, which he followed at Forsyth until 1888.  When he
sold out.

Notes for JOHN WESLEY GIDEON:
  Times were hard and one winter John noticed that corn was
disappearing from his corn crib.  Investigation revealed a
hole in the wall through which a person could reach and
remove one ear of corn at a time.  John set a steel trap
inside the opening.  Early the next morning the dogs were
barking down toward the crib and John went to see the cause
of the disturbance.  The trap had worked and a man stood by
the opening, his arm extended through the hole and his hand
firmly held in the jaws of the trap.  John recognized the
man as a neighbor who had moved to the adjoining farm the
previous fall.  When questioned as to why he was stealing
corn the man told  a hard luck story.  They were poor
people, there had been no crop raised the year before, and
they were near starvation.  All they had subsisted on for
weeks was water cornbread made from the pilfered corn.  John
told the man if he had come to him and told of his privation
he would have seen to the needs of the family.  But anyway
he took the man to the house for breakfast and then sent him
on his way with provisions for his family.  The family lived
on there for years, times improved and they were good
neighbors.
