August 13, 1898, KIA Spanish American War, Phillipine Islands. Notes for CHARLES PHENIX: 1880 - Member of Company I, 1st Colorado Volunteer Ifantry VSV, Shot in battle August 13, 1898. Charley was killed at Malate in the Phillipines and was buried where he was killed. Charley was the color bearer of Company I, so he was leading the charge. As Charley was replacing the "yellow rag of tyranny" with the Starts and Stripes, he was shot, and fell still clutching the flag. A monument was to be erected to commemorate Charley and the other Colorado soldiers; service to the war. Charley was buried in the Phillipines and later exhumed and buried at New Church. Another paper publised a report by a fellow soldier in which he stated that Charley lived for four days. He was Discharged from the Military in 1899 U.S.V. Her father Henry Arthur would wake his boys early in the morning to go and work the fields. She remembered traveling to town to pick up supplies, such as, flower, corn meal, salt, and sugar and the price would only be a quarter. She and her sister would trick there brother Henry Arthur, Jr., apparently there was a hound dog that would urinate on Arthur every time he could and Arthur was deathly afraid of him. They would tell Arthur there was candy hanging in a tree and when he climbed up to get it, they called the dog. Lizzy found a baby Red bird and raised it to adulthood in the house. This little bird lived uncaged within their home. One day when her brothers came in out of the fields, one of them accidently swatted the bird as it flew by their head, the little bird died. She told of a fork that had two of the prongs bent together, and the girls always watched very closely to make sure it was not placed at their fathers place at the table. One day someone slipped and he got the fork. When he used the fork, it pinched his lip, when the children looked up and saw the fork stuck on his lip, they all scattered away from the dinner table, not wanting to deal with the wrath of their father. For as long as she lived in the old home, there was a ticking sound, just like a clock, that came from within a wall of the kitchen. As children this was very spooky because it mostly ticked at night. When the old house was torn down, she went through the kitchen wall piece by piece trying find what had caused the wall to tick, she found nothing. One day when she went out side, the goat had gotten on top of the old Model T Ford and eating the cloth top. Lizzy told of her siblings making their own toys out of tree branches and of her father and brothers hunting. She explained how her mother taught all the girls to can food and make every thing they ate from scratch. She told of going to school and how her brothers would be released to go home and work the farm. After finishing the eight grade, she could take a test and if passed, could teach country school. Lizzy was a family person, she talked many hours about her family and how she grew up. Notes for WALTER HENRY PHENIX: Walter Henry Phenix, son of Virgil Lee and Elizabeth Mae Stout Phenix, was born February 25, 1942, in Windsor, Missouri. He departed this life Tuesday, November 25, 1997, in his home, near Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of fifty- five years, and nine months. On August 16, 1963, he was united in marriage to Priscilla Dee "Pat" Smith, and to this union two daughters and one son were born. He was preceded in death by his mother, and half-sister Alma Lee Phenix. Walter is survived by his wife, Priscilla "Pat", of the home; two daughters, Paula Grey, of Lebanon, Missouri, and Sherri Manning, of Kansas City, Missouri; a son, Michael Phenix, of Lebanon, Missouri; eleven grandchildren; his father, Virgil Phenix, of Warrensburg, Missouri; two sisters, Virta Hayden, of Grandview, Missouri and Vicky Wright, of Warrensburg, Missouri; a brother, Jerry Phenix, of Holden, Missouri; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. He was born and raised in the Warrensburg community, and then moved with his family to Kansas, where he lived for several years. He served his country faithfully in the United States Army and was honorably discharged on March 18, 1963. After he and "Pat" were married, they made their home in Independence, Missouri, where Walter was employed by the Armco Steel Company, in Kansas City, for thirty-one years. About two years ago, the family moved to their present home, near Lebanon, Missouri. He greatly enjoyed fishing, and also liked to go deer hunting. His family was very important to him, and he especially enjoyed his grandchildren. Walter was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and uncle, and was a caring neighbor and friend. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
