This report contains about 85 pages and is current as of, Friday, November 03, 2000 Descendants of William The Immigrant Thornton III Generation No. 1 1. WILLIAM THE IMMIGRANT11 THORNTON III (WILLIAM10, WILLIAM OF EASTCOMBE9, FRANCIS OF THE HILLS8, ROBERT7, WILLIAM6, ROBERT5, WILLIAM4, ROBERT3, THOMAS OF NEWTON2, WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1627 in The Hills, Yorkshire County, England, and died Abt. 1708 in Cod's Creek, Stafford County, Virginia. He married (1) ELIZA BELLING Abt. 1641 in Richmond County, Virginia, daughter of LUKE BELLING and ELIZA RUSSELL. She died Unknown. He married (2) ELIZABETH ROWLAND March 27, 1648 in York County, Virginia, daughter of JOHN ROWLAND. She was born Abt. 1627 in Rappahannock County, Virginia, and died Unknown in Stafford County, Virginia. Notes for WILLIAM THE IMMIGRANT THORNTON III: Taken from the old Thorton Family Bible, in possession of Col. Lewis Bedford Thornton, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and later Mr. W.W. Thornton of Texarkana, Texas. Source: www.brick.net/~celticlady/thornton/william_thornton.htm William was also known as "The Immigrant" and "The Gentleman from the Hills". He was from Royalty, coming from Yorkshire, England no later than 1646, and settled in Stafford County, VA. His plantation was called Fall Hill, located in Stafford Co., VA., where he was buried. The Thorntons were originally fair-haired Norwegian Vikings. The family has been traced back to Firgot, about 13 generations before Rolla. The Norse spelled Thornton as Thurston. William, The Conqueror, from Normandy, was the great-grandson of Rolla. William, the Conqueror, was crowned King of England in 1066. William Thornton was in York Co., VA by 11 May 1646, when he "obliged himself by a paper recorded in that county which included Gloucester, to care for the cattle of John Liptrot until the latter came of age. William Thornton deeded 2,000 acres of land in Rappahannock Co., VA on 16 Jul 1675, to his sons, William, Francis and Rowland, and also mentions a daughter, Esther. (Deed Book 6, p. 83, Rappahannock Co., VA). Name Origin: Torrens Apart from occasional instances of Tarrant (Tarrant in Co. Cork and Torrens in Antrim and Derry are normally anglicized forms of the Gaelic O Torain, Thorn,Torrens etc., being so used, Drennan, Dreinan, Drinane, Drinan and also Meenagh and Meenaghan were interchangeable with Thornton in counties Galway and Mayo, where today Thornton is numerous and Drennan etc., are not. These are translations or pseudo-translations. Drennan is O Draighne in in Irish (draighn‚an means a blackthorn); Meenagh and Meenaghan are Muimhneach and O Muineach in, neither have any connexion with the word muineach (thorny). The word sceach (a briar sceach geal is white-thorn) is the cause of making the Monaghan - Louth name Mac Sceach in into Thornton as well as the normal MacSkeaghan, Skehan etc. It is usually accepted that the sept of O'Drennan belonged to the Siol Anmchadha group, located in the barony of Longford, Co. Galway, where today it survives as Thornton. At the end of the eighteenth century Drynan was fairly widely used in Galway and Mayo. The name has early associations with Co. Westmeath: the Four Masters record the death of Gillachiarain O Draighnen at Fore in 1163. Families of O'Drennan were living in other Leinster counties, especially Kilkenny, and in Co. Tipperary. There are two Ballydrinans in Co. Tipperaryand a Dreynanstown in Co. Kildare. The United Irishman Dr. William Drennan (1754~- 1820), the poet, was the first to call Ireland "the Emerald Isle," was the son of a Belfast dissenting minister. Matthew Thornton (1714-1803), was a signatory of the American Declaration of Independence, was also from the north of Ireland and a doctor before he became a judge. Another Thornton of note was Robert Thornton, who established the Dublin News-Letter in 1685. Then there were a number of prominent citizens of Dublin called Thornton, mostly of English origin. Thornton is a common English name and many of our Thorntons outside Connacht are Anglo-Irish. George Thornton, the Provost Marshal of Munster in 1598, was an Elizabethan undertaker in Co. Limerick and Thorntons are found among the Cromwellian soldiers. Sir Robert Richard Torrens (1814-1884)was the originator in South Australia in 1857 of a simplified land title registration known as the Torrens System, subsequently adopted by many other countries. He was born in Co. Cork. The River Torrens in South Australia is named after his father, Colonel Robert Torrens. ************************************************************ *************************************** William came to Virginia from Yorkshire, England around 1640 (not later than 1646). Termed by genealogists as "The Immigrant." On May 11, 1646, William Thornton was in possession of a paper recorded in York County (including Gloucester) to care for the cattle of John Liptrot until the latter came of age. On February 16, 1665/66 as "Mr. William Thornton" he had a grant of 164 acres of land in Petworth Parish, Gloucester, adjoining the land where he lived and that of Richard Barnard. He was vestryman of Petsworth Parish in 1677. On record in Essex is a power of attorney, dated September 1673, from William Thornton of Gloucester, to James Kay of Rappahannock County concerning 2,000 acres of alnd in the freshes, a track of land which he had bought from Mott. There is also recorded in Essex in 1701, a deed dated July 16, 1675, from William Thornton of Gloucester, gentleman, to Francis and Rowland, two of his sons, "conveying 2,000 acres in Rappahannock County, formerly Gloucester, nut now of Stafford, authorizing the confirmation of said deed." In 1649 he received a land grant of 164 acres in Gloucester County, the grant being awarded for the transfer of 4 persons from England, this being one of the first patents in Virginia (Virginia Land Patent Book 5, Page 573.) He traded in shipping on Mobjack Bay, which is across from the present city of Norfolk, near "Weromoco," stomping ground of Chief Powhatan, John Smith and Pocohontas fame. He operated the ship "Mary Jane" in shipping to Barbados, West Indies. He died in 1708 at the home of his son, Col. Francis Thornton, in Stafford County, and it is stated that his tombstone bears his Coat of Arms, (See Crozier's "General Armory," 1904 edition, page 126, Burke's "General Armory," 1878 edition, page 1010.) Crozier, best considered of all of the plublished American heraldic authorities, records the above described coat and crest as authentic for descendants of William Thornton, of "The Hills", Yorkshire, England who came to America and settled in York County, Virginia, in the year 1646. Burke, British authority, records the same as authentic for the family of Thornton, of Scarborough, Yorkshire, which was hte center of residence of this family. Kirkland Hall, in Lancaster, was the seat of one line. This line bore the lion's head of red. A line owning the estate of Birkin, in Yorkshire, England, bore the lion's head of purple, and placed the cornoet around the nect of hte lion rahter than under it. A Yorkshire line with branchess in Norfolk and Cambridgeshire, England, bore the same armsw, but changed the crest to a dragon's head nad wings of silver issuing from the ducal coronet of gold. O'Hart, in the 1923 edition of his "Irish Pedigrees," Volume 2, states that the Thorntons of England were amont the twelve families among whom Queen Elizabeth divided 111,000 acres in the County of Limerick, in Ireland, which she had taken from the FitzGeralds, Earls of Desmond. This accounts for the branches of the family which settled in Ireland. George THORNTON (continued) ================================== PENSION TRANSCRIPT ================================== At a court held for the County of Green State of Virginia Saturday 14th Day June 1845, the following questions and answers were received by said court and ordered to be sent to the War Department at Washington City. The same said under oath by GEORGE THORNTON of said county and enforces his application for pension under act 7 June 1833. Question # 1...Where and in what year were you born? Answer # 1...I was born Caroline Co Va 18th Nov 1752 at a place in said county called `Guineas Bridges` and now called Guineas Depot. # 2...Have you any record of your age and if so where is it? Ans...Yes. I have a record of it and it is here enclosed, having been taken many years ago from my family BIBLE which I gave to my daughter Lucy B SMOOT, then about going to Kentucky where she now lives. # 3...Where were you living when called into service? Where do you now live? ANS...At the time of all my service in the war I was a resident of Caroline Co Va. I came to this county of Orange, where I now live, in the spring of 1782, and have ever since that lived on the farm I now live on being Green County formerly Orange. #4...How were you called into service? Were you enlisted,or did you volunteer? Were you a substitute and if so for whom? ANS...I was a draughted solider. I was never a substitute. #5...Can you name some of the regular officers who were with the troops when you served? Name such Continental or Militia segments as you can recollect and the general circumstances of your service? ANS...I was never associated with any portion of the regulars before I joined the regular army in the year 1781, I then served but a short time only in consequense of the order from the commanding Col that the office of 2nd Lt should be abolished, and with a good many others, was accordingly discharged. I remember that Col MATHEWS, the commander, asked one Captain to resign that Daniel COLEMAN a favorite might fill his place. That he remembers that he refused, at which Col MATHEWS was enraged and I heard him threaten to break his commission. This service in the regular army was, as near as I can remember, 2 months. As before said, durng my militia tours, for which I claim a pension, my troops were not connected with or in any portion of the regulars. These regulars however would frequently pass from South to North Va of which I heard only. I also remember that all the compensation I ever received for my Revolutionary Service was 21S 6 d paid me by my brother the aforesaid Anthony THORNTON during my 2 months service with the regulars, He I think was paymaster at the time. These circumstances, I think, any of my neighbors can testify to for I have spoken of it unceasingly for these 60 years. #6...Did you ever receive a discharge? By whom? Where is it? ANS...I received a written discharge at the end of each tour, given by the oldest officer from my county in service all of whose names I do not remember. All lost as I did not feel them important at the time. #7...State the names of persons to whom you are known in your present neighborhood who can testify as to your veracity and their belief of your service in the Revolution. Ans...Having lived in my present house for the last 60 years and having raised a large family of white and black children, my neighbors are well aquainted with me. My nearest neighbors can testify to my veracity, those whom I have known since 1780 and now adjoin my plantation, except one are dead. They are Tandy Collins who remembers when I first settled in this county; Daniel Miller, Richard White, George Sheannum and William Herndon WARREN all old revolutionaries. Captain Thomas Davis representative from this and Orange Co and many others whose names might be mentioned, all of whom, if desired, will furnish evidence of my charactor and my service in the Revolution. I further note as to the cause of my delay in not asking for a pension till this late hour, that I had concluded at one time never to apply having as I thought enough property for my own use, but recently in the endeavor to promote the welfare of my children surrendered my property to them for their uses, being too old and infirmed to manage myself; That I now find myself in straightened circumstances and therefore would, upon reflecton, like to get whatever amount may be comming,to me on account of said services...That my neighbors, for years past, frequently told me I ought to apply which I refused to do on all occasions til recently the circumstances I mentioned induced me to alter my determination. WILLIAM16 THORNTON (GEORGE15, ANTHONY14, ANTHONY13, FRANCIS12, WILLIAM THE IMMIGRANT11, WILLIAM10, WILLIAM OF EASTCOMBE9, FRANCIS OF THE HILLS8, ROBERT7, WILLIAM6, ROBERT5, WILLIAM4, ROBERT3, THOMAS OF NEWTON2, WILLIAM1) was born August 30, 1795 in Orange County, Virginia, and died February 18, 1872 in Grover Twp., Johnson County, Missouri. He married HENRIETTA STANLEY January 03, 1819 in Orange County, Virginia. She was born April 28, 1782, and died April 28, 1863 in Grover Twp., Johnson County, Missouri. Notes for WILLIAM THORNTON: William Thornton, deceased, whose portrait appears elsewhere, was a native of Orange County, Virginia born August 30, 1795, where he resided until he married Mrs. Henrietta Rucker, nee Miss Standley, Jan. 19, 1819. This couple were cousins. After their union they soon became converts and were baptized into the fellowship of Salem Baptist church, Madison county, Kentucky by Eld. Herndon. Three children were born, and in their childhood days lost their hearing, which rendered them mute also. Geo A. was born November 25, 1819, and married Jan. 18, 1865, Miss Nellie Lantz, and died December 6, 1880 without offspring; Wm. G., whose biographical sketch is found elsewhere, was the second son; Vivion H. was born December 11, 1820 and is living a happy bachelor's life with his brother William G. They inherited a large and handsome property from their father, which they have increased. His sons were liberally educated. William Thornton was a devoted Christian and liberal supporter of his church. He moved to Boone county, MO., in the fall of 1832, remaining one year; he settled permanently in the fall of 1833, near the present home of his sons, in Johnson county, where he remained until his death. He and his devoted wife joined Liberty Baptist church the first Sunday in March 1844. They traveled a distance of about twelve miles to this church once a month until County Line Baptist church was organized. He was chosen the first deacon of the congregation and ordained by Eld. Thornton Rucker. He always lived a life consistent with his profession, loved and respected by all. He departed this life Sunday morning at ten o'clock, Feb. 18, 1872. He was buried with Masonic honors. His funeral discourse was preached by Eld. Wm. P.C. Caldwell. His remains now rest in the beautiful cemetery on the eminence northwest of the handsome residence built by his sons. Sources: History of Johnson County Missouri, 1881, and 1911. He married MARY JANE ROSS Abt. 1843. She was born Abt. 1822 in Kentucky, and died Abt. 1881 in Saline County, Missouri. On April 4, 1837, Miller Thornton purchased the following federal land in Grover Township, Johnson County, Missouri: The West half of Lot number two in the North West quarter of section three in Township Forty seven of Range twenty four in the District of Lands subject to sale at Lexington, Missouri containing forth-four acres and fifty four hundredths of an acre. Source: BLM Miller Thornton was on the Johnson County deliquent tax list 11-15-1836 for the amount of $0.375 state and $0.375 county. Source: History of Johnson County, Missouri 1881 In the Probate records for the Estate of Miller Thornton, and the 1870 Platte map of Township 48, Range 20 West, in the 5th P.M., that Miller had transferred all land in his name to his wife Mary Jane Thornton. The record also states that Miller died in 1875 and there was not any property in his Estate. Apparently Mary Jane died in early 1880, because the Probate Court started action on the Estate April 9th, 1880 by assigning L. W. Scott as Public Administrator. Upon Miller's death, John R. Hall had made claim to a Miller's Estate for a debt of $52.00, but as state law permitted "If there be a Widow, except such Property as the law (Homestead or otherwise) absolutely reserves to her", allowed Mary Jane and minor children to maintain the property. After Mary Jane's death, John R. Hall, once again petitioned the Probate Court. The court allowed his claim and because there was not any money in the Estate, the land was sold at public auction on the Saline County court house steps. The court ordered that the property be appraised, one of the appointed appraisers was James Hursman, husband of Miller and Mary Jane's step-granddaughter Emma A. Canida Hursman. The land in the South East quarter of the South East quarter of Section Four (4) and the North East quarter of the North East quarter of Section Nine (9), in Township Forty Eight (48) and Range Twenty (20) in Saline County containing Eighty (80) acres was sold to the high bidder Robert W. Jackson for the amount of $90.00. Probate fees totaled $47.80 which left a balance of $42.20 from the sale of the property. It is not stated in the records but I am sure the balance was transferred to John R. Hall for the debt claimed against Miller Thornton's Estate. Born in Howard county, Missouri, March 13, 1827. His father Peter Thornton was born in Virginia, 1779. He married for his first wife Mary Miller, January 20, 1802, by whom he had five children, all deceased. He moved to Howard county, and married Elizabeth Snyder, September 16, 1824. They had one child, James. Peter Thornton moved to Saline county in 1830, and settled on the farm where his son James now resides. His wife died July 6, 1857, and he followed her February 5, 1860. They are both buried on the home place. James, the only child, was educated in the common schools of Saline county. He was first married to Amanda M. Bridgewater, November 21, 1844. They had five children, three of whom are now living, two boys and one girl: William D., Emma E. Crockett and James C. His first wife died May 26, 1863, and was buried in the family graveyard. He was married again August 1, 1865, to Eliza E. Talbott, daughter of Rev. N. M. Talbott. They have six children, all living, three boys and three girls: Susan J., Frances E., Nathaniel P., Luraney D., Edward F. and Henry B. He owns 300 acres of splendid land. Is engaged in farming and stock- raising. In 1864, he enlisted as private in the Confederate army, under Gen. Price, in Capt. Divers' company, Col. Wood's battalion, Gen Shelby's division. Was in the following battles: Lexington, Blues, Independence, Newtonia and Little Osage, where Gen Marmaduke was captured. In the battle of Independence he had a very narrow escape. He was ordered to dismount and advance ten paces to the front. His regiment was ordered to form on him. Just then the enemy made a flank movement, and his colonel ordered the regiment to retreat. Mr. Thornton, with two of his comrades, did not hear the order, and when the regiment fell back, they were left alone to receive the fire of 300 Federals. They, however, miraculously escaped without a scratch. In the fall of 1872, he was elected county assessor of Saline county. In 1874, he was re-elected, serving two terms with credit to himself and his county. He has been an honored member of the Baptist Church since the age of twelve years. They have six children. Three are now living: Mary M., E.T., and Larkin. Mr. Hocker became impressed with the idea that Missouri offered inducements to men of energy, and although the county was new, he came in 1835 and located where he now lives. But by his continued industry he overcame all these trials, and no has his reward. He and his sons own a fine farm of 500 acres, with first-class improvements. Himself and family are members of the Christian Church. The earlist I find him is in 1854 when he applied for Federal Land. On June 1, 1857, the land purchase was complete for 80 acres of land in Otter Creek Twp. (Section 21, T7N-R12W), Jersey County, Illinois. On December 17, 1856 he married his first wife Lucinda Coplin Askew in Jerseyville, Illinois. In 1861, Jersey County, Illinois, Henry was enumerated in a special census identifing men between the ages of 18 and 45 that could be drafted for military service. I have not found any evidence that Henry was involved in the War between the States. Henry and Lucinda had at least three children in Jersey County, Emma, Henry Jr., and Martha. On October 11, 1865, they were enumerated on the State Census, the next month, they moved to Blackwater Township, Saline County, Missouri and November 23, bought 120 acres (Section 4, T48-R20). Hank and Lucinda lived on this farm and had three more children, Thad, Ed, and Albert, then Lucinda died about 1872. Hank's second wife was the daughter of his neighbors Miller Thornton and Mary Jane Ross. Hank married Luraney Ellen Thornton April 21, 1873, and they had two children, Minnie and Willie while living on the same farm. On February 13, 1882, shortly after the death of Ellen's mother and the probate of her fathers farm, Henry and Ellen sold out and moved. On February 17, 1882, they purchased 120 acres of land (Section 9, T49-R23) south of Elmwood, Saline County, Missouri. Hank and Ellen lived and had seven more children, with only four surviving, Burl, Walter, Clarence, and Herman, on the Elmwood farm until February 2, 1895 when they sold and purchased 50 acres of land (Section 16, T47- R24) in Grover Township, Johnson County, Missouri. There they had two more children, Fred and Ida. On March 15, 1902, Hank and Ellen borrowed $43.20 from the Knob Noster Bank and used the farm as collateral. Hank died before the load was paid, but the load was settled March 5, 1903. Hank lived on this last farm until his death November 15, 1902. The farm is about 6 miles north of Knob Noster, Missouri on State route 32, west on County road 700 about one mile, on the North side of the road. He had a three room log cabin where at least one of his children (Fred), and one granddaughter (Nellie) were born. In 1906, four years after Henry's death, Ellen remarried and transferred the farm to Albert; Albert transferred it to Thad; Thad transferred it to Willie; and by 1909 Willie transferred it to Logan Davis whom he had worked as a servant and was a close neighbor of the family. Hank and Ellen are buried in the Hocker Cemetery, also on County road 700, about a mile and one half East of their home. Source: Audie L. Canida, Great Grandson Killed Himself Henry Canady who owned and lived upon 40 acres of land seven miles north of this city, committed suicide last Saturday morning by shooting himself with a shotgun. He was 72 years of age. Saturday morning he took the gun and started hunting. About 300 yards from the house he sat upon a knoll, first getting horse weed with which to push the gun trigger, he deliberately planted the gun at his heart and pushed the trigger with a branch of the weed. The branch broke off and he then placed the end of the weed against the trigger and the full load was discharged into his breast, killing him instantly. Coroner Bills was notified and came down on the afternoon train. He did not think it necessary to impanel a jury, but took the testimony of some of the family which showed also that it was not the old man's first attempt.
