Netscape Composer Webpage Tutorial
Creating Tables

Placing images and text on Web pages is not like using a word-processing application for an absolute-sized sheet of paper. Web pages are meant to be dependent on the size of a computer screen, so the layout of your webpage often looks different on someone else's monitor.

You probably noticed the difficulty of placing images and text sections exactly where you wanted them. To overcome layout limitations of HTML, Web designers use Tables to arrange text and images.

On your webpage, place the cursor at below your other work.

Click the Table Button on the Composer toolbar;
it looks like a windowpane.

The Insert Table window opens and gives options for table:

Number Rows and Columns
The default is 2 rows and 2 columns.
Table Width
Defaults to 100% of window.
Width adjusted by percent or by number of pixels.
Set width to 90% to have page margins.a
Border
Default table border is 1.

Click OK and the table appears on your webpage.

You can make adjustments to your table in the Table Properties window. Place cursor into the table, then on Netscape toolbar choose Table - Table Properties.

Cell Spacing -- "bars" between cells
Cell Padding -- space between cell contents and bars
Default for spacing and padding is 2
Table Alignment
Places entire table at left, center or right of page.
Choose center.
Background Color
Can be different from background color of page.
  • With dark/image background, choose light color.
  • With light background, choose contrasting color.
a
Click Apply to see spacing, padding, alignment and color changes without closing Table Properties window.
Make additional changes as desired. When finished, click OK.

Add rows to bottom of table by putting cursor into last cell and hitting Tab key.

Add rows or columns within table as follows:

  • Click into any cell contiguous to where you wish to add the column or row.

  • From the toolbar choose Table - Insert ->
OR Right-click and choose Table Insert ->
    then choose your addition
in relation to the cursor cell:
    • Row Above or Row Below
    • Column Before or Column After
      a
  • Composer adds row or column.
Choosing Cell Before or After adds another column, but adds one cell in relation to the cursor cell and the others to the right end of the table.

Let's look at more table features that optimize page design ...
