Invisible tables, nested tables and cell spanning are the techniques most used by Web designers to arrange Web pages. Tables can even mimic elaborate graphics.

Column Span and Row Span extend a cell beyond a single column or row. (Cells to be "covered" should be empty.)

To fully comprehend how spanning works, add cells for a 3 column 3 row table and number the cells 1-9.

• Put cursor into bottom left cell#7 
• Drag into cell #8 to the right
• Use Table menu on toolbar (or right-click) and choose Join with Cell to Right. 

Left cell extends across both columns of row.

Let's try Row Span

• Put cursor into cell #6, center of far right column
• Drag down into cell #9 below.
• Use Table menu on toolbar or right-click to choose
  Join Selected Cells.
• Center cell extends down over both rows of column.
