Many people think a webmaster is a person who creates webpages
and keeps them updated. Actually, that's a web author. An author
can create with a WYSIWYG program or straight HTML--good authors use both.
A web designer plans and designs websites with a unique identity
(including graphics), consistent navigation, and coherent content. This
combination of skills is very rare and that's why most quality webdesign
is done by a talented group of graphic designers, web authors, information
architects, and marketing specialists. A well-designed website can cost
several dozen thousands, even hundreds of thousands of dollars.
A true webmaster administers a website after it's created. This
person must have some webauthoring (and often database management)
skills for updating webpages, some design skills for expanding the website,
and some technical computer skills for maintaining and troubleshooting
the webserver. A demanding profession, but that's why they earn about $150,000!
