1. Margaret KUNTZ was born about 1800 in France per 1860 census. She was born in France, or Germany, as many people did not want to admit to being born in Germany in the late 1800's. She came to America with her son and was found living with him and his wife in the 1860 census. She may have died in the 1860's, as she is not found in the 1870 census, at least not with her son. A Margaret Kuntz, aged 70, is shown in the 1870 census as being from France. She lived 9-WD 16-SUB DIVN. (Series M593, roll 819, page 481). Jean Kuntz Smith says she was from Holland and the family was Catholic.

2. Nicholas William KUNTZ, the son of Margaret KUNTZ, was born about 1833/4 in France - per 1860 & 1870 census, France (per 1860& 1870 census). He married Anna M Caroline TIMMERMAN on August 11, 1859, and they have four known children. Nicholas died on February 11, 1907 in St. Louis, MO. He was buried on February 11, 1907 in Bellefontaine Cemetery, St. Louis, MO.

Nicolas came to America with his mother, who lived with him at the time of the 1860 census. Since the census listed him as being 26 in 1860, we believe he was born about 1834. In 1860 he was a blacksmith, with $4000 in real estate and $200 in personal estate owned. By 1870, he owned real estate valued at $10,000 and personal property of $5000.

His obituary in the St. Louis Republican reads: Entered into rest on Friday, February 8, 1907, at 9:30 o'clock a. m., after a lingering illness, Nicolas Kuntz, beloved husband of Anna C. Kuntz (nee Timmerman), dear father of John N., Nicholas W., George N, and Emma V. Kuntz and our dear father-in-law and grandfather, aged 73 years xx(unreadable) months and 27 days. Funeral will take place on Monday, February 11, at 2 o'clock p. m. from residence, 5203 Ridge Avenue, to Bellefontaine Cemetery.

Their marriage record in the City of St. Louis, MO, book 9, page 328: State of Missouri City & County of St. Louis — I certify that on this day I have joined in the hold bonds of matrimony Nicholas Kuntz & Caroline Timmerman, Certified by me the Eleventh day of August, A. D. 1858. Louis E. Nollan, minister of the Gospel. Filed and Recorded November 21st, 1859, C Keemle, Recorder

Family tradition (unverified at this time) says: He was a blacksmith in St. Louis, MO, and he is reported to have invented the roll-bit they use for the horse's mouth piece today. He did this during the civil war. This was reported by the Time Life Books. It gives all but his name which they did not have at that time.

4. ii. The date of birth for Emma V. KUNTZ is not known. Emma died on July 15, 1922. She was buried on July 18, 1922 in Bellefontaine Cemetery, St. Louis, MO. Her obituary in the St. Louis Post Dispatch reads: Entered into rest on Saturday, July 15, 1922, at 12:30 a. m., Emma V. Kuntz, beloved sister of John N., Nicholas W. and George N. Kuntz and our dear sister-in-law and aunt. Funeral will take place on Tuesday, July 18, at 8:30 a. m., from residence of her brother, John N. Kuntz, 4813 Labadie avenue, to St. Philip Neri Church, thence to Bellefontaine Cemetery.

3. Nicholas William KUNTZ Jr., the son of Nicholas William KUNTZ and Anna M Caroline TIMMERMAN, was born in February of 1865 in MO, per 1900 census. He married Wilhemina Barbara BURKEL on October 16, 1888, and they have four known children.

Nicholas died in May of 1938 in St. Louis, MO. He was buried on May 25, 1938 in Bellefontaine Cemetery, St. Louis, MO. The city directories of St. Louis, Missouri state the following:

His obituary in the St. Louis Post Dispatch reads: KUNTZ, NICHOLAS W. -- 8232A Frederick st., beloved husband of Minnie Kuntz (nee Burkel), dear father of George W. and Edwin Kuntz and Mrs. Alfred J. Altschuh, dear brother of George N. Kuntz, dear father-in-law, grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle and cousin. Funeral Wed., May 25, 2 p. m. from the Suedmeyer Chapel, 3934 N. 20th. Interment Bellefontaine Cemetery.

When their marriage was recorded in the city of St. Louis MO, it showed the minister to be - J. F. Klick, 1109 N. 14th. The application for marriage shows the following: Nicholas W. Kuntz Jr., lived at 1908 Wash St. and was 24 years of age. Miss Wilhelmine B. Burkel, aged 20, lived at 1411 Wash St. They applied for marriage license #29294 on 16 Oct. 1888.

9. iii. Nicolaus August Louis KUNTZ was born on July 14, 1893 in St. Louis, MO. Nicolaus died on April 1, 1898 in St. Louis, MO. He was buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery, St. Louis, MO. His obituary reads: KUNTZ, Friday, April 1, from accident, Nicholas A. beloved son of Nicholas Kuntz, Jr., and Minnie Kuntz, nee Burkel, aged 4 years and 9 months.

The accident was widely reported in the local newspapers. He was playing with friends at the intersection of 24th & O'Fallon Streets. A wagon driven by Frank Pielisky, a Polander, employed by F. Henseler of 1421 North Jefferson, came along. Young Nicholas apparently climbed onto the rear of the vehicle and then ran to the stakes on one side. In doing so he lost his balance and fell between the stakes to the street. Before the driver realized what had happened, the wagon ran over the boy's head, crushing it. Nicholas apparently died instantly. Pielisky carried the body to the office of a physician at Jefferson Avenue and Wash Street, where it was examined. The skull had been fractured and the doctor said death must have been instantaneous. The body was then carried to the home of the boy's parents. The accident appeared to be unavoidable according to all reports.

7. George Nikolaus KUNTZ, the son of Nicholas William KUNTZ Jr. and Wilhemina Barbara BURKEL, was born on March 7, 1889. He married Emma HANSELMAN on February 3, 1912 in East St. Louis, IL, and they have four known children. George died on January 9, 1977 in Tuscola, IL. He was buried on January 13, 1977 in Friedens Cemetery, St. Louis, MO.
