This genealogy was compiled by Albert F. McVean.
FOREWORD
The McVeans were common folk. Disappointing as it may be to some, no royal blood is known to have coursed through their progenitor's veins. This family is a Sept of the Clan McNab. They lived in the most remote part of Glen Lochay, a narrow valley measuring about five miles from the top of the mountain ridge on one side to the top of the mountain on the other side. Through this valley flows the river Lochay which empties from the west into Loch Tay near the village of Killin. In this obscure fastness lived seventy-five families supporting themselves on their little crofts, "nothing wanting".
However, there came a day when England's constant warring created a great demand for wool to outfit its far flung armies and hired mercenaries. As a result the price of oared enormously and the landlords, eyeing the greater profits therefrom, mercilessly forced the renting crofters from their little plots of ground and turned the whole into grazing lands for sheep.
In this dilemma the crofters were faced with starvation or the necessity of emigrating and most if not all from this area left their former homes to emigrate to America. The majority of them made their way to Johnstown, N.Y. where one Donald McVEAN, the beneficiary of his grandfather's sizable estate, had settled just prior to the American Revolution.
It would have been utterly impossible to establish relationships and lines of descent in this work had it not been for Deacon John McVEAN, 1768-1867, who about the year 1843 wrote an account of the early members of the family up to that date.
The compiler of this genealogy has been gathering material for over fifty years, copying tombstone inscriptions, Bible records, holding innumerable personal interviews, and benefiting in many instances from the research of others.
He was particularly fortunate about 1925 to obtain a copy of Deacon John's opus from Miss Kate McVEAN of Schoolcraft, Michigan, herself an avid collector of family lore. During the course of a busy working life, he managed in short vacation periods to range throughout the middle west, Johnstown and Canada to ferret out stray members of the family and their lines. In many cases there are voids requiring detailed and time consuming research. Nor has he been able to keep up to date the constantly growing numbers of the current generation.
In addition to the known descendants of Donald McVEAN of Glen Lochay, there are other McVeans whose ancestry is not known, even to themselves. They are to be found in Lochgilphead and Kilmartin, Argyle, Scotland, in Glasgow, on Prince Edward Island, Canada whence one of the offspring settled in South Portland, Maine. From this branch springs John MacVane, NBC announcer at the United Nations.
There is a McVEAN in New Zealand and the two Patricks who were ministers at the church in Killin, Scotland, about 1790.
It is entirely possible that some of these are descended from Big Duncan McVEAN, natural son of Donald McVEAN who was the first to bear the surname McVEAN. No record was kept of Big Duncan's offspring. There is also the possibility they may be descended from Peter McVEAN, 3rd generation and son of Red Duncan McVEAN, who Deacon John McVEAN said was "of a not very honest disposition" resulting in his brother, Donald, putting him out of his house. He was reported to have gone to the country of Strath Spey where he had a "nourishing fondly". But who can now unravel the enigma of those who lived at this early period in a clan society, mostly illiterate and in the absence of the written record?
From Bible entries and tombstone inscriptions in the Johnstown area and the Caledonia and Mumford Cemeteries it is obvious that the early Scottish settlers and their offspring were quite universally content to use the form McVEAN down to about the turn of this century. Since the ethnic prejudice has led many to abandon this long established form in favor of what they consider the correct Scottish MacVean. Probably unknown to them is the fact that a large number in Scotland still use the simpler Mc prefas can be verified by a perusal of the Glasgow directory.
In view of this the compiler has chosen to retain the spelling McVEAN used by five generations of his own family since the arrival during the American Revolution of his great great grandfather. Of those who take issue with him he cheerfully accords the privilege of indulging their own preference in this respect.
Notwithstanding the imperfections and lack of completeness so obvious in this chronicle, the compiler gladly passes the torch to others to continue the task thus far so laboriously advanced.

I GENERATION
1 DONALD McVEAN, lived about 1600 and was the first person to bear the surname McVEAN. He resided on a small farm or croft named Batavernie, or Grove of the Mountain, in the most remote part of Glen Lochay, Breadalbane, Perthshire, Scotland. He was the son of a man named simply Donald, who will in this chronicle not be considered the first generation. Near the end of the 18th century a letter of dismission from a parish in Scotland to one McVEAN intending to emigrate to America described him as being from Botuarniemore. The question arises, was it a different farm or croft?
