CWA-COPE

COPE, is CWA's politcal action committee, just in case you didn't know what it was. Why should we be involved in politics? Everything we do, whether it's work, church or even in our neighborhoods, ITS POLITICAL.

As part of organized labor, we are being attacked on a daily basis by the powers that be in Washington, there are lawmakers who would like to see the demise of organized labor but we are strong and we can be stronger if we elect officials who are labor friendly. It really doesn't matter which political party you favor, Democrat or Republican, both have elected leaders who have been friends of labor and those are the people we support through COPE. Some of our members think we only support Democrats, but that is simply not true, we interview the candidates and make a choice based on the convictions of the person, not the party.

A little history lesson: Labor Unions fought for the 40 hour week, the minimum wage, child labor laws and safe work places. In many cases the Unions that fought for these things already had them in contracts with the companies they worked for, but wanted a better way of life for all Americans. So, if you know some older person who was a part of the labor movement tell them thanks.

Each CWA local has a quota of $1 per member each month, and we have met that goal every year for the last 22 years. The money that is used to meet that quota is strictly volunteer dollars, no treasury or dues money is used for that purpose. We have members who give 25 cents a paycheck and we have members who give a considerable amount more but every contribution is important.

September has been designated as COPE month, if you do not contribute, talk to Gerald Murray and ask him for a COPE card, if you do contribute, maybe you could add a quarter to what you are already giving. Whether it's 25 cents or 25 dollars it all counts and together with millions of other Union members we can elect officials who will do the right thing for working families, our elderly and the future of our children
