Landmark Education, Creating Possibilities
or pursuing profit?A critique by Markus Land
This used to be a rather scathing essay about est/Erhard/The Forum et
al written in Robert T. Carroll's usual fine style. He's revised it several
times now as he received input from Forum alumni.

Think
about it, an essay with a sharp satirical edge.
"It usually starts with someone you know, you'll ask what it is all

In about three days your life is going to change. "

Is Landmark Forum a cult? Harmful? Does it use group
hypnosis, mind control, or brainwashing techniques?
Some people say no.
Not so, says the LEC brochures that graduates hand out when asked
this question. Two Forum graduates with Ph. D.'s write testimonials that
deny allegations that the Forum has cultish aspects to it. From an Official
LEC press release packet provided by a Forum Graduate
Lowell D. Streiker, Ph.D. discusses the Forum.
He says "The Forum is not a cult in any sense of the word, religious or
otherwise." He was a consultant hired by WE&A to evaluate est and make
recommendations. He later actually did the Forum.
"Perhaps several years ahead of his time, Dr. Streiker pointed out an
essential flaw in the "cult mind control" theory: it denies the individual
any responsibility for his own life and his own ability to think and to
change his own destiny. The "cult" was the scapegoat for all of the problems
and difficulties which could possibly have been easily resolved by honest
communication and taking responsibility for self and family. "
Raymond Fowler, Ph. D, Psychologist, gives his
personal views and observations.
Executive Vice President and Chief
Executive Officer of the American Psychological Association, and Professor
Emeritus, at the University of Alabama. He says, " I would like to observe
that The Forum experience in no way resembles any of the so-called cults
I've read about." He and his wife both went through the Forum.
Others say well...yes and no, maybe... watch out
for pitfalls.

In light of the tragedy of the Heaven's Gate Suicides, it would be
beneficial for each person to take 5 minutes and reflect on their belief

" By trying to see "them" as different from "us" we may feel unique,
and invulnerable to such social influence, but also shield our own beliefs
from the kind of critical analysis needed. Most college- level textbooks
in Social Psychology can provide further information about the principles
of social influence. However, the important lesson is to take responsibility
for periodically reviewing those taken-for-granted beliefs we have picked
up from the groups to which we belong. "
