We all perceive "God" in different ways. I suggest that our ideas about God are more indicative of our own psychological and spiritual state than of who or what God really is.
Some characterizations of the nature of God are lofty and uplifting. Others literally make me sick! For instance, what would we think of human parents who had children with the deliberate intention of not accepting them unless they conformed to a particular mold? In humans we condemn this, but that is exactly how some people think God relates to us as His/Her "children." Conformity to the "Christian mold" is seen as an absolute requirement for acceptance.
What do we think of people who kill their "enemies"? We condemn their actions and put them in jail. Yet God is represented by some as full of wrath, visiting vengeance and condemnation on His/Her "enemies" (e.g., sinners, unbelievers, etc.) [Incidentally, isn't an enemy defined as one who poses a threat? How can a real God be threatened by anyone or any thing?]
I think we need to be sure that the God we worship is at least as good, wise and loving as we strive to be--and incomprehensibly more. N'est pas?
