| Did "God" create "Man," or did "Man" create "God"? This is one of the questions often raised in discussions of religion. Well-l-ll . . . Can I have it both ways? | ||
| As far as I can tell, there is no denying that we do create, in our own image, the God-we worship. Just look at the variety of human ideas about God. Tell me about the god in whom/which you believe, and I'll tell you about your own character. Vengeful, "jealous" god? You're very insecure and afraid for your own ultimate fate. Loving, forgiving "father"? You are at peace with yourself and the universe. Your god's going to cast all the unbelievers into a fiery pit to burn forever? You're angry, have feelings of rejection, and want to see those who (in your mind, at least) have rejected you "get their due." (People who don't project those feelings onto "God" often take drastic action and themselves give the offenders "what's coming to them." Ergo, Columbine High School, et al.) | ||
| Recognition of this phenomenon/syndrome is essential for any healthy religious philosophy. We must own/take responsibility for our personal religious and philosophical convictions and how we came to adopt them. | ||
| Recognizing all that, however, does it preclude
the possibility that there might be a higher creative
intelligence who/which, through whatever means, produced us? I can't see that either
stance must necessarily exclude the other. |
