Space Simulations

The Whisennand have operated a full-size, portable simulator of the Space Shuttle for launch, landing, and on-orbit simulations since 1992. The simulator, built by the Whisennands, maintains as much full fidelity as possible to the original for a great space simulation experience. Launch and landing scripts are used for both aircrew and ground personnel to involve all participants in the team experience.

The simulator consists of the forward flight deck of the orbiter, with arrangements to experience the rest of the flight deck and middeck layout. It uses radio links to Mission Control and a simulator operator, with the video, sound, and other effects to make the sim as realistic as possible. A continuing series of upgrades and improvements are planned.

They have used the simulator for summer camp, school, scout, church, and CAP missions, the on-orbit portions of which are tailored for the specific mission plan and time available. Plans are used for prior astronaut testing and training if needed. The mission can be expanded or compressed to the available time.
