Are more laws needed? The title of this page scares me, and hopefully it scares you to, because every day there are those that would rather turn the country over to the lawless criminals than allow you and I to protect ourselves (and maybe them as well). Gun control activist say the NRA is controlling our politicians, I say if they are they deserve our gratitude and support. Thank You! Having recently read the unfortunate story about the six year old child who brought his uncle's stolen gun to school and killed a fellow classmate I would like to express my deepest sorrow to the family of Kayla Rolland as they are also the victims of this senseless killing. I would also like to ask the gun control supporters to answer how any new laws would have saved that child's life. In the shadow of this terrible tragedy our president has used the momentum of grief to call on Congress to pass a gun bill by the April 20. He asked, “How many people have to get killed before we do something?”. This something includes background checks at gun shows, trigger locks on home defense weapons, a ban on the import of large-capacity ammunition clips and photo IDs for gun owners. I won't argue the merits (or lack there of), of any of these request and I'll go a step further to say that trigger locks are a part of my gun security and I have never purchased a gun at a gun show. Additionally, the president stated that "A trigger lock law would have prevented this killing." I will just ask some simple questions, such as "Why didn't the laws we already have protect this child?", "Would the drug dealer who left the loaded gun accessible to the child have put a trigger lock on his stolen weapon?" and finally, "How would any of these proposed restrictions on our American rights have helped Kayla live to see another day?" I would further propose that the "something" President Clint spoke of include the enforcement of the current laws and punish, to the fullest extent allowed, the criminals who ignore those laws. What I see is our politicians ignoring the true problems as they try to get public support for meaningless measures that will slowly but surely continue the movement to disarm the honest law abiding American citizen leaving the criminals better armed than the police. Remember additional controls will only impact the law abiding citizen, as murderers and rapist do not concern themselves with gun laws. I doubt that any concerns have been raised by the criminals who eagerly await the disarming of the American public. This should speak loudly as to the sensibility of additional gun control. Has gun control worked at the state level? What have we learned. Well let's see what has happened in a few states. First, lets take a look at New Jersey. When it comes to gun laws, New Jersey, where a permit is required to own a gun and another is required to buy a handgun, is the most prohibitive state of all. The only place in America that's worst than the Garden State is the District of Columbia where handguns are totally prohibited and rifles must be stored disassembled. One would think with gun control at these levels these must be the safest places in the country to live. Now the $64,000 question - Who wants to take a late night walk through Newark or DC. Then there's Vermont where your birth right, a clean criminal and mental record are all that's required to carry a concealed handgun. Vermont currently has one of the lowest violent crime rates. In fact there are about 12 times more violent crimes in Newark, NJ than in all of Vermont. Let's also look at Texas where a concealed handgun license will be issued to any law abiding citizen who a) takes the time to pass the written and shooting tests through an approved course b) passes the background check and c) pays the $140 fee. Since Texas became a "Will Issue" state in 1996 the violent crime has decrease just like most if not all other "Will Issue" states. The studies have shown that the reason behind this is not because the citizens of these states are shooting more criminals. The reason is that the criminals have chosen to find less risky opportunities, most likely in states where laws protect them by banning guns from the law abiding citizens. Is this what we want? Who will build weapons for the military and law enforcement. Who will build weapons for the military and law enforcement. Stricter gun control is putting the gun manufactures and the federally licensed dealers out of business. At some point only the few companies with government contract will be able to stay in business. This will simply lead to a monopoly and I think we all know what happens to products and services when a company holds a monopoly - high price and poor quality. Who will pay this price? The answer is both the public, in the form of higher taxes and the men and women serving in the military and law enforcement with their very lives. Criminals Love Gun Control Of course they do, because they believe that the laws don't apply to them. Wake up folks - that's why they are called criminals! Will the drug dealer keep a trigger lock on his illegal automatic weapon. To the criminal, new laws simply mean that fewer victims will be in a position to defend themselves.
