My Pipe Collection
I think my interest in
pipes started as a young boy when I had a little plastic pipe for blowing
soap bubbles. I would pretend to smoke it as my grandma Lottie would tell
me stories of her smoking corn silks in a pipe of corn cob construction.
My collection later grew to different models of the real thing starting
with the cheap souvenir corn cob pipes on up to an antique Meerschaum that
couldn't be replaced for less than a hundred dollars. About
half were acquired at estate auctions and the others came from various
tobacconist shops.

Clockwise from top center:
1. Genuine Meerschaum with Lexan stem, 2. Dunset pocket pipe made of briar
(stem rotates to cover bowl while in pocket), 3. USA made pipe of Imported
briar - no brand, 4. Scotsman made of Algerian Briar, 5. Vanderlick moisture
free pipe, 6. MasterCraft meerschaum-lined briar, 7. Dr. Grabow Viking
(a very accurate copy of a falcon) with extra bowls, 8. the ever popular
czech pipe tool and a couple of blends.

My pipes are rarely lit because
I enjoy the look and feel of these intriguing tobacco burners more than
anything. But, there is the rare occasion my cousin Charley and I get together
and have a ceremonial burning of a couple of bowls of our favorite blend
to relax as we reminisce.
