THE
TWO LAWS PART II Having established
the fact that the Ten Commandments were given by God without a mediator,
that is, He declared them with His own Voice, and wrote them with
His own finger on tables of stone, we are ready to give Bible proof
that “The Law of Moses” is a separate and distinct law.”
Added because of the Ten Commandments. “For the law was given
by Moses but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.” This is
positive proof that it was the “Book of the Law,” and
not the Ten Commandments, that was given by Moses. The “Added”
law is call “The Book of The law.” This “Book
of The Law” which was “given by Moses” is referred
to throughout Paul’s letter to the Church of Galatia. Remember
it was the “Book of The Law” and not the Ten Commandments
that Paul was speaking of in hi rebuke for going back to the “works
of the law.” This added law, “The Book of The Law”
was called “a Schoolmaster” (Gal.3:25)’
After telling us that God declared and wrote the
Ten Commandments, Moses said: “ And the Lord commanded me
at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, that ye might
do them in the land whether ye go over to possess it” (Deut.4:14).
Moses “wrote all the words of the Lord” in ‘The
Book of The Covenant.” It was called “The Book of The
Law.” “And Moses wrote this Law” (Deut. 31:9-11).
And it came to pass, when Moses had made an end of writing this
law in a book, until they were finished, that Moses commanded the
Levites, which bear the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord, saying
take this Book of the Law and put it in the side or the Ark of the
covenant of the Lord you God, this it may be there for a witness
against thee” (Deut. 31:24-26). This “Book of the Law”
containing “Precepts” was given by the hand of Moses,”
(Neh,9:14).
Col.2:14 (Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against
us).
Eph.2:14 (Having abolished the law of commandments contained in
ordinances).
Gal.5:15 (Be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage).
By the handwriting of ordinances the Apostle most
evidently means the ceremonial law. The law of Moses that was against
them, they were bound to fulfill. It was contrary to them, as it
condemned them for their neglect and transgression of the law of
Moses. These were curses that were written in the book Containing
Ordinances. When Christ was nailed to the cross, our obligation
to fulfill these ordinances was done away with. Those Religious
Rites and Ceremonies contained in Ordinances, was made merely for
the purpose of keeping the Israelites a distant people and pointing
out the Son of God till He should come. We must hold fast our Christian
profession; it brings spiritual liberty. On the contrary, Judaism
brings Spiritual bondage.
Can the same Law be abolished by Christ and at the
same time be established by faith in Christ? There were definitely
Two Laws recognized back there--the one having fulfilled its purpose
ended at the death of Christ, while the other one is still Holy,
Just, and Good--to give a knowledge of sin. The one is a Perfect
Law by which we are to be judged (James2:10-12). The other was called
a yoke of bondage.
Deut 10:2-5 (The words that were in the first tables,
and thou shall put them in the ark).
Deut.31:11 (Thou shall read this law before all Israel in their
hearing).
Ex.24:1-12 (He took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience
of the people).
Deut.31:26 (Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of
the ark).
Israel was required to obey Two Laws, the Ten Commandments, and
the Book of the Laws. In short, they were to obey the Ten Commandment
law of God and the law given by their mediator Moses--Two Laws.
Moses placed two tables of stone: the Ten Commandments in the ark,
and the Levites placed the Book of the Law in the side of the ark.
The tables of stone were to be kept within that ark always, but
the Book of the Law was to be read to “All Israel” every
seventh year at the feast of Tabernacles. Moses was the mediator
of the Old Covenant (the Law written in the Book), and Israel was
commanded to keep the Ten Commandments and the law of their mediatory,
but we are under the New Covenant, and we no longer have to obey
the law of Moses, but we do have to obey the law of our Mediator,
Jesus Christ. We obey one law, the Ten Commandments, and we must
have the Testimony Teaching of Jesus Christ (Rev.22:17).
Gal.3:19 (The law was added because of transgressions,
till the seed should come).
Heb.7:12 (The priesthood being changed, there is made of a change
of the law).
Heb.7:27-28 (For the law maketh Men high priests which have infirmity).
That Book of the Law contained “Precepts, Statutes, and Laws.”
One series or code of laws in the book of the law regulated the
Priesthood and the offering of animal sacrifices for sin and other
offerings under the old covenant.
For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and
of goats should take away sins. The law and system of animal sacrifices
for sin could not take away sin, but was a School Master to bring
us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. That law, with
the sacrifices, was a type and shadow of the one Sacrifice, or death
of Jesus, that does take away sin. When Jesus died that system of
animal sacrifices had to end, or was abolished at the cross.
Heb.9:9-12 (And carnal ordinance imposed on them
until the time of reformation).
Heb.10:1 (For the law (of Moses) having a shadow of good things
to come).
Col.2:17 (Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body of
Christ).
These rites and ceremonies were enacted, by divine authority, as
proper representations of the Gospel system, which should reform
and rectify all things. The time of rectifying, signifies the gospel
dispensation, under which everything is set straight; everything
referred to its proper purpose and end; The ceremonial law was fulfilled
and was repealed; the moral law (the Ten Commandments) was exhibited
and more strictly commanded. The Spiritual nature of God’s
worship was taught, and grace promised to purify the heart. So that
through the power of the Eternal Spirit, all that was wrong in the
soul is rectified; all things made new.
The Law, with all its Ceremonies and Sacrifices, was only a shadow
of Spiritual and Eternal good. The Gospel is the image in itself,
as including every Spiritual and Eternal good. This Ceremonial Law
can never make the sinner thereunto perfect, and cannot remove guilt
from the conscience or impurity from the heart. All these things
wee types, and continued in force till the design of them, was of
Christ--pointed Him out, and the excellent blessings which He has
procured, The law was but the shadow or representation of good things
to come; none should rest in it. All that it pointed out is to be
sought and obtained in Christ.
