jan's garden 2001

This is a snapshot of my garden on June 30th, 2001.  I've always considered my garden more a summer than a spring garden.  In recent years I've planted bulbs for spring color and have azaleas, dogwoods and a Yoshino cherry, but most of my focus remains on summer plants.  Perhaps because summers here are so brutally hot, I want something pleasant to look at as I recover from heat prostration.

Front Bed:  'Silver Elegance' lily, 'Frances Williams' hosta and 'Dragon Wing' begonias.  Although not visible in the photograph this bed is filled with shade-loving perennials including many varieties of hosta, astilbe, tiarella, heuchera, heucherella & perennial begonia.  Visibile in the back is a magnificent river birch that was one of the few plants worth preserving on this property. Front Porch:  Mea the Cat supervises my gardening activities from the safe haven of an air-conditioned room.  When outdoors her favorite sleeping spot is the area between the base of the pot and the wall--cats really are peculiar, aren't they?

Driveway:  Potted plants including various citrus, gardenia, bay laurel, geraniums,  plumbago, tender lavenders, etc.  The rose 'Buff Beauty' pretending it is  remotant.  My driveway is only 7' wide and, even if you manage to get your car through the gate, you can't open your door.  So I very quickly turned it into a spot for my seemingly endless collection of potted plants.  Luckily, there is a circle drive in front that we can park in.  Driveway:  A favorite pot that was a gift from my husband and children being given a second life as an ornament now that it can no longer fulfill its original function.
Driveway:  A direct descendant of the "Fern That Ate Tulsa" which unfortunately  lost its life in last year's unusually cold winter.  After a few months outdoors I think this one could follow in its big brother's footsteps.  The original fern was so big that it acted as a privacy screen; the fronds scraping the ground ( the fern stand is 5' tall).  The fern helps create solitude for a favorite morning sitting area.   Driveway:  To the left is a fragment from a Tulsa building.  While I do love my bits and pieces of old buildings, I would really rather admire them on the building.  This area is just outside my kitchen door.  The brick is dry-laid on the concrete driveway so a future owner could return it to use as a drive.
North Garage Wall:  'Stargazer' and 'Casa Blanca' lilies, 'Aureomarginata' hosta.  The lilies are planted at the feet of the azaleas along this wall.  The azaleas do away with the need for staking--although the lilies do lean a bit as you can tell from the 'Stargazer' trying to join its friends next door.  Lilies are one of those plants I can never have too many of.  Every year I tell my self I've reached my limit, and every fall I find myself ordering more.  Perhaps someday I'll learn a little self control.  The planter is actually an old lion's head fountain.  Also visible is a variegated, lacecap hydrangea--hydrangeas are another plant I can't have too many of.
West Pool Walk:  'Happy Returns' daylily, dwarf purple fountain grass, purple coneflower, 'Angelmist' angelonia, papyrus & a single 'Hermosa' rose.  This bed is new this year, but the 'Hermosa' rose has  traveled with me from house to house and is an old familiar friend.  To the right is one of this year's favorite pots--a combination of scaevola and fern-leaf lavender.
