Job Links
updated 7/4/2002

One of the duties of a VAC is to help students find employment.  Some resources I have used are the local newspaper website links.  Since I live in the Houston area, I have included Houston links.  However, I realize that some of you do not live in the Houston area, so I have added links to other newspapers, too.  One of my favorite links to websites is a reference site called Refdesk at www.refdesk.com.  The web links to newspapers   in the United States and abroad is http://www.refdesk.com/paper.html.  Hope this helps some of you in other places besides the Houston area. :)   After finding the link to the newspaper nearest you, you will need to find the classified or want ads section.  That will take you to the employment area.  In the Houston Chronicle, you can search for jobs in your particular job area.  I'm not sure if other newspaper websites do the same.  You can also have it include classified from the Sunday paper as well as the day you are searching.  After we find out what jobs are available at what companies, we can go to a mapping website to learn if that company is near your home.  I use www.yahoo.com, but I'm sure there are many other mapping websites.  From Yahoo, I click on Yellow pages at http://yp.yahoo.com/ which gives me types of businesses in the community.  From there I click on Restaurants or Entertainment, or whatever type of job in which the student  is interested.  A student in high school age 16 and up usually has to take an entry level job,  Yahoo will ask for a location from which you will be commuting.  Type in the address of his or her home or school if he will be going to work from school.  This will give you all the businesses of that type that surround that area, including the distance and how to get there.   For a person like me who is "direction impaired," especially without a map, it is invaluable.  See if you can find any of the companies that were mentioned in the newspaper.  I also tell the students to go to some of the stores and introduce themselves, ask if they have any jobs, and ask for an application.  If they say they don't have any jobs at the time, ask if you can fill out an application anyway, so that when and if a job does come open, they will be at the top of the list, instead of the bottom.     I will try to add other job websites later.  Thanks for being so patient.
