The German family name Boss is derived from a pet form of the name "Butze," which is a short form of the Germanic personal name "Burkhardt." Burkhardt is derived from the Old High German "burg," meaning "fortress" and "harti," which means "hard, strong."

One of the earliest references to this name is a birth record of David Boss, the son of Albrecht and Elisabetha Boss, who was born in Dettenhausen, Wurtemberg, on the 3rd of August, 1624. Another early record reports the marriage of Stefan Boss and Apollina Weissman which took place on the 25th of November, 1659 in Bergel, Bavaria.

BLAZON OF ARMS: Quarterly, first and fourth azure, a lion rampant reversed or, second and third gules, an eagle displayed sable.
