I am trying to track down iris by the name of Theora, Penelope, Elizabeth, and Flora Lee. My great grandmother Harrer bread them and I would like to find someone who still has them or could send me the descriptions of them. They were named after my mother and her sisters and would have been registered in the 1940's to 50's

Hi Judy:

About 3 years ago you sent me a box of 50 iris bulbs all mixed. At the time I spoke with you you hadn't heard of iris' blooming in Hawaii. I was still living in an apartment building and I had to plant as many as I could in big long pots. I was planning on moving into my home at the end of that year. The foliage grew beautifully. When I moved into my home, I dug a trench and filled it with perlite and good draining soil. The floiage was growing beautifully and this year I had three plants bloom. A lot of them died due to reasons beyond my control. I lost the the organizational chart I had made for myself to keep track of which one was which. I had a deep purple, yellow and white bloom. But then beginning of March I noticed the leaves carried some sort of strange white cocoon. I did some research and I believe it's some sort of tiny caterpillar, not too sure yet. When I re-dug the soil to add some fertilizer and bug killer, I had noticed that the caterpillar had clumped up the perlite and made nests out of it. I was so excited when they bloomed, but now I believe a lot of the bulbs have died because of these caterpillars. I haven't seen anymore, but do you have insight on this, and how I may get my flowers to bloom more consistently? I added a 20-20-10 fertilizer to it, since they didn't have the 10-10-5 (I think that is the one). Do you have any sugestions??? Also, how can I go about ordering more bulbs from you. Can you provided prices for me. I wouldn't trust anybody else. Since I know they can bloom and I love the foliage throughout the dormant seasons, I would love to really focus on raising them here.

Your input would be so greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Sam

Hi,

We met at the Keisling reunion in Livingston, TN. I am married to Shelton Keisling, Ray's third cousin.

Anyway, we are redoing our iris bed, and we were wondering if we could plant thrift in with the iris, and if so, would that help keep the grass out of the bed? It's on a hillside. If not, what would you recommend ? Also, have you ever planted poppies in with your irises? They bloom close to the same time, so I just wondered.

Hope to hear from you.

Oh my GAWD I LOVE your photographs!!!
Are the names of your Irises their known names or did you just decide to give them names? I ask because you have many that I have and I have just gotten mine from friends and plant sales over the years and have never known their names. I am now going to use yours though because they surely fit the flowers.

I live in Carmel Valley Calfornia and this has been a great year for Irises.....it is just about the only flower I have because the deer don't like it so I get to enjoy them through the season instead of maybe one day

Again, I love your photos!

We came by your place of business in 2001 and purchased some mini dwarf iris bearded by the name of Lena M and Banberry Ruffles and wanted to know if you had added any more varieties since that time. Would like to order a few more Lena M's and perhaps some more of a different variety. Our son lives in Kearney and we could possibly run by to see some or are you set up to show them on line. Your response would be appreciated. Thank you.

In 2006 I will be entering my first flowers. With sites and information like yours I feel more confident. THANK YOU for sharing

My mother had the prize patch of iris in my home town -- Poplar Bluff, Missouri -- when I was growing up in the 1940-50s. I still think they are the most beautiful harbinger of spring, and think of them as the orchid of the American backyard.
