N5ZE's Rock Mite Page

I call my Rock Mite "Obsidian" after the shiny black volcanic glass. The Rock Mite is available in kit form from http://www.smallwonderlabs.com. For a whole pile of Rock Mites check out N0RC's web pages at http://www.radioactivehams.com/~n0rc/rm.

Obsidian Rock Mite with headphones and Palm Paddle

Headphone jack left, paddle right, function button center. The LED in the top center is the indicator for the N7VE SWR bridge.

The Rock Mite circuit board slides into the extruded Al case. The case is made by Context Engineering and is available at Fry's electronics for about $11. Steve, AA5TB used a similiar case in natural aluminum for his Rock Mite. The solder lugs provide standoffs from the front panel switches. Despite the small size of the circuit board it's kinda crowded in there.

The N7VE SWR bridge is on the right next to the BNC connector. The 9V internal battery is in the center. There's a switch on the back panel to select internal or external power. I measure about 220mW output with the 9V battery.

The SWR bridge is sensitive enough to indicate a mismatch down to 1.5:1 SWR even on the 9V battery!

The back panel includes the BNC antenna connector, SWR bridge in/out switch, internal or external power switch, and the ubiquitous 2.1mm power connector.

Twin sons of different mothers: the Norcal SMK-1 on the bottom and the Small Wonder Labs Rock Mite on top. The enclosures are identical except for the color.
