I AM A FORMER SOUTHERN PACIFIC NOW UNION PACIFIC LOCOMOTIVE ENGINNER. I WORK IN THE LOS ANGELES DIVISION. I WAS IN TUCSON AREA NOT TO LONG A GO. I WAS AT THIS RESTAURANT WHERE I FOUND THE NAME EL PASO & SOUTHWESTERN RAILROAD. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THIS RAILROAD.

Great site! I and became a fan of the EPSW while living in Tucson, 1970-1972. I've managed to cover a lot of the former property from Tucson to Columbus and on the affiliated EP&NE from El Paso north to Tucumcari. Would love to get back down that way and prowl around some more.

Excellent map! What software did you use? I work on the UP out of Tucson. It's a shame the Southline is gone, with power dying on the grades, and the shear number of trains, this would be a vital link in today's rail system were it still in place. Thanks for this site.

I have been on the roads several times while driving between Bisbee and Albuquerque. Very interesting facets of the old railroad that I didn't know. I have stopped at the marker in Rodeo telling the story of the SP passenger trains

I've spent much time in the area you described and the next time I return it will be with more knowledge and interest, just because of your fine work. Thanks!

when he started but he quit in 1911 because of cenders
in his eye's, he was an Engneer and lived in or around
Tucumcari in a sodie on 160a. My dad was then 6y old.
Thanks for all the info! Roland Young, Clovis,CA.

Lloyd, this is great, and this is just what the Indian group needs. Yes,Yes,Yes. I will start right away. Your auntie does not know a size of anything, not even my bank account. Wow I always knew you were great, and one of my favorite nephews. I think there is a lot of info on Indian land issues, and what is happening up here to the owners. I can hardly wait to get started. Your site looks so good, just what I want to do. Thank you.

Great site. I have been a lifelong railfan, but didn't even know of the EP&SW until I was stationed at Fort Huachuca and saw the old depot in Tucson. Too bad the EP&SW never made it to LA. Keep up the good work!

Hello,

Thanks for your very informative site!

I was wondering if you might know how I might discover more information on the first trip of the railroad into mexico... I am told that my Grandfather Charles William Gates was the engineer.. Is there any way to find out for sure?

Anything you can tell me will be grately appreciated... I thank you in advance, and hope to hear from you at your earliest convenience....

Sincerely,

Terry Gates

Mr. Sumner, Thank you for a fine historical site of the 'Southline'. I have been a recent traveler of the route between Douglas and El Paso and your fine website has answered many questions about the old railbed visible along many sections of Hwy. 9. I will never look at this area the same again, for you have made me an informed observer.

I really enjoy looking at your EP&SW website, especially the maps. I have been a longtime fan of the EP&SW and it is great that someone is doing a website dedicated to the RR. I am originally from ABQ, where my interest in the EP&SW began.

I see a few people would like more inf on the EP/SW
railroad? I would to. I was along Rt.9 this year and to the
UV Elpaso.TX. and to there museum. They have about
40 boxes of info on that line. I hope some one can
go through it and put it on line.

Fine work. I remember seeing the RR pulling up the tracks west of Animas in the early 60's. I used to drive from Rodeo to Columbus about once a month on business. The road was dirt then. Also remember waiting at the crossing in Columbus for the train to pull out of the station so I could get across the track. Thank you.

MY TWO SONS AND I HAVE BEEN EXPLORING THE AREA BETWEEN EL PASO AND COLUMBUS SINCE THE EARLY 80'S. WE DO THIS AS A RECREATIONAL PASTIME AND PARTLY BECAUSE I AM A HISTORY BUFF. OFTEN I HAVE WONDERED IF I WAS ALONE IN MY OBSESSION WITH THIS AREA. IT IS FULL OF HISTORY AND THE DESERT IS TRULY BEAUTIFUL. I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THERE IS A WEB SITE THAT DEALS WITH AREAS AND SITES THAT WE HAVE BEEN VISITING FOR YEARS. IT'S A TERRIFIC WEBSITE. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. I REALLY ENJOYED THE VISIT. THANKS!!!

What a really "slamming" web site!! Absolutely one of the BEST railway sites I have seen. As a native of southern Arizona (now working for an Eastern Class I railroad) I really appreciate info about the "ghost" railroads of the southwest. The EP&SW is and has been one of my favorites for a long time. You have done a really remarkable and commendable job in creating and maintaining such an excellent source of info. I had recently seen article in Model Railroader mag on the bridges of the "Southline". Thanks ever so much for your efforts! Your work has greatly helped me in the creation of the EP&SW in minature.

I am very interested in following the history of the El Paso & Southwestern Railroad. I am specifically trying to trace the history of my family from Zacatecas Mexico to Arizona. This is the best trail so far.

I normally don’t praise consumer-oriented products on bulletin boards but I
gotta tell you that I bought this great Horror compilation called Boogeymen
that was more like Horror 101. While I would like to consider myself a
connoisseur of the Horror Genre I found out more about the 17 films featured
on this disc than viewing most of these movies several times each.
Boogeymen included – Production info, trailers, live commentary (by Robert
Englund – Freddy Krueger himself), bio and history. A great DVD especially
if you want to go beyond just the entertainment value. Some of the movies
featured on the DVD include Hellraiser, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,
Wishmaster, Phantasm, Phantasm, The Puppetmaster, Friday the 13th and
Halloween. I would say a must have for the collector.
46 Tue Oct 30 2001 15:54 George
Hey, I agree with you about the Boogeymen DVD. I highly recommend everyone who is in to scarey or horror movies go out and get it. I have watched it 100+times in 3 days already. The commentary by Robert Englund makes the DVD worth while. Don't pass this one up!
47 Tue Oct 30 2001 15:55 Tom
Hey man, I went out and got the Boogeymen DVD and its the scariest movie I have seen in a long time. It has all the scariest scenes of all my favorite movies on one DVD. The best part is Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) does commentary throughout the DVD if you choose that option. I highly recommend you all go get it now before it sells out. Go get it now and be the hit of Halloween.
48 Wed Oct 31 2001 11:23 Kyle
Has anyone else heard anything positive on this Boogeymend DVD? I have heard it has all the best scenes from all the scariest movies ever made. It has Freddy, Jason, Leprechaun, Pinhead, Leatherface, and many more characters in it. I want to get it but want more info from people who have seen it or heard about it. I heard the trivia game is awesome as well. I think I will just go get it and stop being cheap. It sounds pretty awesome.

I really enjoyed your site. I lived in Deming for a time and always wondered about the abandoned railroad at Columbus. I recently found a book,"New Mexico's Railroads: A Historical Survey" by David F. Myrick (UNM Press)that has several pages on the EP&SW including depot photos and one train picture. I'd like to see more period photos of steam and diesel powered trains at various points along the line.

As a former resident of the Phelps Dodge town of Playas, I found the information at this site to be quite helpful in filling in the history facts that I was never able to get in the eleven years that I lived there. When Phelps Dodge shut down the smelter I had to move on just like so many others along the route of this railroad. Great piece of work. Thanks.

I have been absolutely fascinated with the Bataan Memorial Trainway in El Paso in that it is a "track depression", but I have been frustrated because I've not been able to find much information. I know that it was constructed from about 1946-1950, with its inauguration on 21AUG1950, but very little otherwise. If anyone has additional info, please let me know. Many thanks, John Eyberg

Nice site. Claudia Rivers with the UTEP special collections department has a lot of files on the south line. She also has construction files on the Battan Train way. One point SP 3420 was origionaly EP&NE 171, the purchase did not happen until July 1905 she was built in August 1904.

Afriend of our family told us of a small town that was to do with the railway(just off el paso) it was never built because of all the deaths during the said construction. it was to be called La-Rubia. Please let me know if this story is true. it would be appreciated.

Would like to possibly purchase one hundred or so acres (possibly containing the remanents of a "ghost town" or mine), somewhere along the New Mexico - Arizona border. Preferrably central to northern areas and property containing caves would be a +. I am nearing retirement age and this property will mainly be used to live and hunt on, for ourselves and our children. Please feel free to contact us by email at any time, even just for chat..........

Have been researching Playas, NM when I ran into your web pages and guestbook. Have some friends who live there in the company town that is being displaced. Rather sad as they look on the town and their home very fondly. Interesting project and interesting history. I'm an old railroad buff anyway and ran into all the associated information on Railroading in this web site and verious URL's. I'll forward the URL on to some of my other friends with similar interests.

I was born in El Paso, TX in 1959. I now live in Tucson, Az. My grandfather Henrie Evan Birch was a conductor and brakeman on the southern line. He lived in Douglas, AZ. My father was born in Douglas. My mother, born in El Paso, met my father while visiting a cousin of hers who live in Douglas. My family has a strong El Paso, Douglas, South Line connection with numerous relatives living along the line in it's short lifetime. My great grandmothers first husband was killed in the raid on Columbus. I have recently become interested in family history and thank you for your website. Good luck and best regards.

The A&NMRR crossed Southern Paacific RR's line in Lordsburg, with Clifton, Arizona the northern railhead. Clifton was also home to the Clifton Northern Railroad, the Shannon Railroad, and the Coronado Railroad.

Sir,
I agree with many others in the questbook, very nice site. I am interested in the El Paso and Southwest railroad station in Tucson, AZ. For example a person could board a train in Tucson in say 1920 at that station ride east paralleling the Southern Pacific track until Benson, AZ then travel south/southeast to El Paso, TX., is that true? I believe the station openned in 1913, when did it close?

Spent an evening in Hachita, and hiked the Continental Divide Trail section in the area. I have pictures of Hachita, Old Hachita, and the area, if anyone wants them (JPG). Your Hachita page is the most detailed I've seen.

Bless you for what you're doing! I had no idea of your existance until a colleague forwarded your site. The EP&SW and NWP truly are my favorite parts of the former SP "Golden Empire." And, oh, how I'd love another ride on the Tucumcari-French or Lordsburg-Clifton mixeds!
