Mastodon, New Mexico
Dona Ana County
Elevation 4,112

Mastodon is located about 8 miles west of El Paso, Texas.  This town was a siding and water station along the El Paso & Southwestern Railroad.  Remains include a few concrete foundations to buildings.  The foundation to the water tank is only a few feet from NM Highway 9 on the north side of the road.  NM 9 is what used to be the railroad bed.  On the north side of this town, through a gate in the fence, is the old  “Borderland Highway", the old dirt road used by travelers in the days of railroad operation.  Portions of this old road are still visible if you look hard.

This is the foundation to the Mastodon water tank.  The Franklin Mountains near El Paso, Texas are seen in the background.
