Family 1: Mary ___

Mary's surname is clouded in confusion. So far as I can guess at the reliability of my sources, she was born in 1665 as Mary MONTAGUE, married a JOHNSON, then married Richard HAWES, and later married Joseph BALL. Finally she died in 1743 [11, 22, 62, 63].

A number of web pages give her surname as BENNETT, but most of these pages offer only sketchy information. One of them says that Mary BENNETT was born in West Chester, England, and died in 1720 [64].

One renegade page insists that her surname was FONTAINE, with approximate dates 1670 - 1745 [65].

It is a shame to know so little about the great grandmother of our country.
