William Pinkerton

b. Circa 1807
d. 1891, New Mexico

Notes: William Pinkerton was a runholder in Australia for 17 years. In 1854 he moved from Victoria, Australia to New Zealand. He became wealthy largely by selling beef and mutton, at premium prices, to gold prospectors.

He developed a sheep run near Tapanui, New Zealand, which became known as Brooksdale. In 1867 he sold Brooksdale to his son-in-law John McKellar and moved to the United States, where he took lands in California and New Mexico.

William Pinkerton

d. 1918, Christchurch, NZ

Notes: At the age of 12, William helped his father establish Brooksdale, an early sheep run in Otago, New Zealand, near Tapanui. Around 1867 he followed his father to Southern California. There he lived on a 12,000-acre ranch, "La Pleyta". He returned to New Zealand shortly before his death.
