In March of 2001 we finally recieved
a diagnosis that could explain all the issues that Chance and Madison have been
coping with all their little lives. After many doctors appointments, many tests,
and lots of research, we made a trip to Cleveland, Ohio to the Cleveland Clinic
Foundation to see a specialist in Mitochondrial Disease, or Mito for short.
On the next few pages I will share what the Mitochondrial Diseases are and how
it affects both Chance and Madison, as well as the process we went through to
finally get a diagnosis.
- A
Mitochondrial Disease Primer: When enough mitochondria are not working
correctly a disease may result. Mitochondrial diseases often involve the brain
because of the tremendous energy requirements of the brain cells. Mitochondrial
diseases are very variable in their features so called clinical heterogeneity.
- Mito
and Chance: Chance is a complicated kid with some profound strengths,
and some definate weaknesses and I hope this page will help to explain him
and the journey we have been on thus far. Some of the words are technical
so I have linked them to the Glossary page for further defining.
- Mito
and Madison: Madison too is complicated...and beautiful, and lovable
and wonderful and here we talk about all the things that we have helped her
deal with the last few years. Again, some of the words are technical and
are linked to the Glossary, so check it out if your not sure what something
means.
- Glossary
of Terms: Here I have tried to define alot of the more technical
terms for things that are mentioned on the webpages. I realize that if you
do not have a child with special needs, or are new to having one, some of
the words sound like a foreign language. I feel like I have had a crash course
in the new language myself!!!
