The Drow City Project I am currently working on a drow city for the upcoming game Neverwinter Nights. I will post descriptions and images of what I have so far. I am always open to suggestions from the public, and hope to make some of these 3D models placeable objects in the game. Click the pictures to enlarge. This is an older map of the basic layout of the city. Some features of the city are not shown such as the bottomless pits and the plateaus. The city resides in a large cavern beneath an underground lake. The drow have punctured holes in the ceiling of the cave allowing the water to flow down the large central stalactite. This water pours over the Temple of Lloth and down to its base. From there, the drow have irrigated the water to flow out in a spider web like pattern. The drow chose this area for a city not only because of the large cavern, but also because of the giant flat-topped mushroom colony where they can actually build structures on. Here is a basic picture of what the temple will look like. All my models will be a gray color until Neverwinter Nights is released because I want to match the textures of the buildings to what will be available in the cavern or Underdark tile sets. On the map, area one shows the location of The Temple of Lloth. The temple was carved from a giant stalagmite that was forming directly under the central stalactite. If viewed from above, the temple would look like this: The second and third areas show the two massive columns that support the cavern. These crucial supports have been formed into the more important areas of the city, such as Arach Tinilith and Melee-Magthere. Area four on the map shows a stream of water flowing out of the city. It may be possible for the drow of the city to dam this water and control the water supply of a distant city. Because water is scarce in the Underdark it could be valuable. I'm not sure about that idea, but you can give any suggestions you like. Just e-mail me. The fifth area on the map is a lake formed by one of the streams that branch from the Temple. A large island sits in the middle of the lake that can be used for keeping rothe or it could make a fortified area for one of the ruling houses of the city. In area six, I wanted either a densely populated mushroom colony, or a very secluded and swamp like mushroom forest. The web like streams branch out here and supply these mushrooms with plenty of water. The last part of the map illustrates where the gigantic shelf fungus grows on the walls of the cavern. These are strong enough to support even stone structures and are linked with bridges. Market trade or common living could be housed on the lower shelves and some of the noble houses may wish to live on the higher ones. Here are two views that show the entire city. The first shows the larger structures and the layout of the streams of water. The second shows where I would like to place some bottomless pits and plateaus along with the giant flat-topped mushrooms. As I have said, I welcome any suggestions for making this idea more interesting. I plan to be updating this project and this area of the website often. If you would like to be notified via e-mail when changes are posted let me know. |
