One of the perks for the guests of the Sea Palms Resort is access to the Atlantic Ocean beach. Carol and MJ took advantage of that privilege and spend part of the morning strolling on the beach, wading and dipping in the water, and otherwise exploring. Of course, there was a lighthouse; it would be called "129," so it wasn't quite the challenge as the "219" at St. Augustine. But it afforded a nice view of the St. Simon's Sound and a modicum of exercise to offset some of the effects of the fine dining. Harriet prepared another elegant meal at lunchtime after which she and Carol went shopping while Pete and MJ stayed home and talked about the "good ole days" in graduate school at Baylor. The conversations about their teaching fellow colleagues at Baylor peaked their curiosities about the whereabouts of their old friends. Pete got his computer going and launched searches for as many of their colleagues and their graduate professors as they could remember. The project met with very limited success, except that they found an article describing a ceremony in which Byron Brown, one of the teaching fellows, had had a street named for him in honor of his thirty-eight years of service to the Conally ISD, near Waco, TX.. Can you believe it, "B.B. Brown Drive?" |
| Changing tactics somewhat, they started searching for Darlene Kyser, the Secretary to the Dean during their grad school days and known still to be employed in the School of Education because of a recent e-mail exchange with MJ. Having secured Darlene's phone number from the Baylor web site, Pete decided to call to have a chat with her and to see if she could help in the e-mail and web search. Although she didn't have any current e-mail addresses for the colleagues, she did have phone numbers for Byron Brown and Dr. Bill Lamkin. Pete and MJ each talked to Byron's answering machine over a span of about an hour, but they actually made contact with Dr. Lamkin. "Bill, do you know who this is?' was Pete's gruff beginning statement in his best Texas twang imitation. Eventually, Harriet and MJ also took their turns at conversations with their former professor and advisor. Pete announced to Dr. Lamkin that "in an unscientific, but very sincere local poll" he had been unanimously voted their best graduate school professor. | ![]() |
| Dinner was at a trendy St. Simon's Island restaurant featuring Southern cuisine. Following the "thank you's" and "goodbye's" Carol and MJ retired to the Sea Palms Resort for the last evening on St. Simon's Island. They both agreed that their time with Pete and Harriet was most enjoyable and hope that time can be spent together again, only not waiting 32 years. | |
