They got on the road at Clarksville a little earlier than usual for the final leg of the journey back to Kansas City, The route would take them quickly into Kentucky, since Clarksville, TN, is only a few miles from the KY state line. They drove through blinding rainstorms in the mountainous areas of Kentucky and Southern Illinois, entering Missouri at St. Louis. They drove past the stainless steel arch on the Missouri River without stopping to be sure that they were out of the city traffic on the west side of St. Louis as soon as possible. Since many people were still celebrating the 4th of July, even though it was actually the 5th, the dreaded traffic jam didn't materialize. Lunch/dinner was at a Chevy's Mexican restaurant on I-70 just west of St. Louis. As the result of a warning at a tourist information center about the highway construction on I-70 just east of Kansas City, they took the old "northern route" (US 65 and US 24) into Kansas City. The house was still standing and all visible property was in tact (i.e., no fireworks damage) as they approached home; so they declared the "Southern Tour" a success. |
