THE TYLER
ROSE:

The Earl Campbell Story

An Authorized Biography
by Paddy Joe Miller

Presented in a beautiful collector's edition,
an inspiring story of a real-life hero...

Earl Campbell is widely acknowledged as the greatest football player the state of Texas has ever produced, and, many would add, the greatest running back that ever lived. But there is infinitely more to the man than the legend, and the "more" is what The Tyler Rose is all about.

From the rose fields...

Earl Campbell was born to the poverty common to blacks in deep East Texas. In a family of 11 brothers and sisters, he had little to hope for beyond a life of toiling in another man's rose fields until he was too old and stooped to tend the thorny bushes any more.

His one opportunity arose from his God-given ability to run with a football, and other players' in-ability to bring him down. His determination to make the most of that opportunity and to transform it into still greater ones came from the strength of his relationships with his family and friends, and a desire to make himself someone of whom his father, long dead, would have been proud.

To the football field...

Though much of the book is, quite naturally, about Campbell's exploits on the ootball field, it is, at its heart, the personal saga of the boy who became "The Man." Left fatherless at eleven, Earl sought out other father figures and role models to emulate, finding them most frequently in his coaches. His greatest guiding force, however, was his beloved mother, Ann Campbell, who longed (and fought) for her children's happiness, instilling in them all a sense of strength and integrity.

That integrity was to endear Campbell to his coaches, teammates, and even adversaries, yet would make him a thorn in the side of a certain team owner whose own integrity fell far short of Earl's. The true personality of the owner (whose name we withhold out of respect for the fine people of Tennessee) comes across clearly in the book, as does the level of esteem in which Campbell holds him.

To life after football, and the greatest challenge of all...

Beyond the world of football fame, Campbell continues to exhibit the virtues that made him such a hero to all who know him or know of him. When most of his contemporaries were happily beginning "life after football," Earl Campbell faced perhaps his greatest challenge of all: overcoming the debilitating panic attacks that washed over him, suddenly and without warning, and left him cringing, terrified, and unable to face even his closest friends, much less the adoring fans who continued to call out for him.

With the help of his wife, family, and a few dear friends, Earl faced, and learned to control, this illness, and now spends a great deal of his time helping others to lift the veil of terror from their lives. It is ironic that a man who sought so desperately for heroes in his own life had only to look in the mirror to complete his quest.

Now you can read his inspiring story.

In The Tyler Rose, Pat Miller has captured not only Earl "The Man" — Heisman Trophy winner and Pro Football Hall of Famer — but Earl Christian Campbell, the real flesh-and-blood man behind the headlines and the hype. This is the true story of a genuine American hero.
