Complementing the on-road bicycling education classes, considered a core part of the Ferguson B.I.K.E. project, are proposals to improve bicycle facilities in the City of Ferguson and on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus.
The ubiquitous bicycle rack consisting of vertical bars, which just holds the front wheel, is not recommended. Chief among its drawbacks is incompatibility with the popular U-lock, and the possibility of buckling the wheel if the bike is tipped or knocked sideways and the rim is aluminum alloy.
The minimum criteria used in bike rack selection for this program are:
- Support bicycle frame in at least two points for good stability
- Allow locking with a choice of either a cable lock or a U-lock
- Reasonably durable
- Aesthetic
Designs meeting or exceeding the above criteria which have been selected for this project are shown below, and listed in ascending order of cost per bike, including hardware and shipping to St. Louis.
To calculate the total cost of a bike rack multiply the cost/bike by the rack capacity.
N.B. The following racks are powder/polyester coated except where specified.
