Introduction

Successful bicycling programs require both scientifically accurate engineering techniques and sociological and psychological insights into people's beliefs and behavior. This type of engineering requires an understanding not only of scientific fact but also of the cycling population, of the different levels of cycling skill, and of the practical lessons to be drawn with various approaches to facilities construction, education and law enforcement as they apply to bicycling.

Cycling Transportation Engineering is a multi-disciplinary subject that covers this field. As in any professional subject, the practitioner cannot simply follow a handbook, standard or guide. Only by understanding the principles -- and by drawing on practical lessons learned from past experience -- can the bicycle program administrator decide what to do and how best to do it.

This seminar considers the facts, the principles and the practice of cycling transportation engineering in the areas of traffic behavior and facilities, individual psychology and training, and group psychology and politics.
