The following are compilations, primarily of e-mails from individuals to the cycling listserve facilities-n-planning@topica.com, but also members@apbp.org, relating to the above. The first reference I personally saw to such a sign was from Alan Forkosh in a message dated September 15, 2003. Below is an excerpt from his posting and also a close-up of the sign:

San Francisco

'New San Franciso Bike Sign / SF-Sign

While taking pictures at the San Francisco Grand Prix bike race this last Sunday, I spotted a new bike-related sign. Below is a quick link to some pictures of it:

Washington, DC

Richard C. Moeur responded the same day, making an interesting observation and noting a sign with similar intent in the District of Columbia:

'Interesting concept, but I'm surprised at the choice of a warning sign. There doesn't seem to be an inherent hazard in the activity, and the directive message (bicyclists use full lane, other road users change lanes to pass bicyclists) would seem to be more suited for a regulatory sign.

One (not-quite-identical) example of this type of regulatory sign is used in the District of Columbia, and may be seen at http://members.cox.net/ncutcdbtc/signs/dcbkrtln.jpg'

City of Santa Cruz, California

Cheryl Schmitt alerted the APBP list on May 18, 2004, to the sign below which has been installed in Santa Cruz where she is Bicycle/Pedestrian Coordinator. Cheryl wrote:

'Here is a sign we have installed in two locations. So far so good.'

In reply to a query in a later post she added:

'The sign has not been officially approved. The sign underneath is a Do Not Pass (# feet) sign. Both installations are locations of short gaps of bike lane (1/4 mile). At one of these locations a fatal collision occurred when a motorist passed a bicyclist. Just not practical.'

City of Ferguson, Missouri

Richard Moeur posted his suggested version of the Washington, DC, sign which is the basis of the sign currently being investigated for possible use in the City of Ferguson, Missouri, and illustrated below.

Missouri Vocational Industries*

The City of Ferguson has been provided with information from Missouri Vocational Industries, which makes a variety of signs for state and local agencies only, and has provided a quote for different sizes of signs based on the above. Typical cost for a 30" x 30" sign in quantities of 1 to 24 is $37.95 each, and for a 30" x 12" sign is $17.25 each. The final sign configuration and cost is currently being negotiated.
