Level III

Open Water Paddling

In the Level III course, using the skills developed in the Level I and Level II courses, we start building the skills and knowledge necessary for safe and fun open water coastal paddling.

These are some of the techniques and skills we will cover:

  • Reading and interpreting nautical charts
  • Taking bearings and plotting courses
  • Calculating distance, time, and speed
  • Paddling a course by following a bearing
  • Using ranges
  • Interpreting tides and currents
  • Using NOAA weather radio
  • Solo and assisted rescues in open water
  • Advanced strokes and maneuvers
  • Making crossings
  • Refining paddling technique
  • Towing

Course Length: 8 hours
Cost:  $190 (includes food and lodging, but not equipment)
Prerequisites: Level 1 and Level II Courses
