President's
chat
* I would like to welcome everyone back into the fold after the holidays. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves and had a happy and productive holiday season. Now that we are all back into the work mode, I wanted to express my pleasure at the attendance of all who attended the reception for Judge Lindsay. We had well over 100 guests in attendance at this event, including numerous state and federal Judges and representatives from most of the large law firms in the area. For all who helped organize, plan and help carry out this event, your hard work and dedication are appreciated. Special acknowledgement should be given to Louis Sturns, Faye Watson, Phelesa Guy, Glen Lewis , Trisha Graham, Bobbie Edmonds and Cicely Nedd-Thomas along with all of our sponsors who are listed below. The feedback on this event has been very positive and hopefully the members of TCBBA feel the same. Secondly, our Christmas party, held at the Law offices of Louis Sturns, was well attended and a good time appeared to had by all. Special thanks should be given to Phelesa Guy and Cicely Nedd-Thomas for organizing our party and to Mike Heiskell and Judge Wayne Salvant , who had to drive to Ft. worth in the middle of the party to pick up a certain someone's (smile) donation . Also special thanks to all who donated food, beverages and the like to make this another successful TCBBA event. Third: For all those who
attended our annual Christmas play for local Ft. worth students entitled
" Santa Claus goes to Jail" your time, efforts and contributions were greatly
appreciated. It is good for the next generation to see people who resemble
themselves at a court house in a capacity other than as a defendant. Can
someone say "positive role models"! Special thanks to Bobbie Edmonds for
organizing this event, to Sean Colston for playing Santa, and to Tsombe
Anderson for being the prosecutor.

*Plans are being finalized
for our program entitled "The People's law School". This is an informative
program sponsered by TCBBA to give the public (non-lawyers) nuts and bolts
basic rights in areas of the law that non-lawyers encounter. Example Torts,
landlord-tenant rights, criminal law, family law etc. This event is scheduled
for the Spring of 1999. Volunteers and panel participants are needed, please
contact Jackie Robinson at 817- 877-4800
email= jrobinson@GwinnRoby.com
for details.
* Texas Wesleyan Law School
library wants us to know it is open to lawyers from TCBBA on a daily basis
until 12:00 midnight. We can use their computers for research using Westlaw

* In keeping with this years
TCBBA administration's theme of preparing for the practice of law in the
new millenium, I am urging everyone to get an e-mail address and to gain
access to the internet. For all of you not yet on the Internet, or using
e-mail, or for those who wish to switch internet providers, TCBBA has an
ongoing fundraiser in the works, which could help you as well as TCBBA.
If you contract with Flashnet communications to be your internet provider,
they have agreed that TCBBA receives a small percentage of your initial
installation fee for our treasury. So tell your friends and employers to
contact Douglas Greene to assist them in gaining access to the internet
and e-mail.

| LAWYER HUMOR
Farmer Joe decided his
injuries from the accident were serious enough to take the trucking company
(responsible for the accident) to court. In court, the trucking company's
fancy lawyer was questioning farmer Joe. "Didn't you say, at the scene
of the accident, "I'm fine!?," questioned the lawyer.
Farmer Joe responded,
"Well I'll tell you what happened. I had just loaded my favorite mule Bessie
into the ......"
" I didn't ask for details," the lawyer interrupted, "just answer the question. Did you not say, at the scene of the accident, "I'm fine!" Farmer Joe said, " Well
I had just got Bessie into the trailer and I was driving down the road
......"
The lawyer interrupted again and said, "Judge, I am trying to establish the fact that, at the scene of the accident, this man told the highway Patrolman on the scene, that he was just fine. Now several weeks after the accident he is trying to sue my client. I believe he is a fraud. Please tell him to simply answer the question." By this time the judge
was fairly interested in Farmer Joe's answer and said to the lawyer, "I'd
like to hear what he has to say about his favorite mule Bessie."
Joe thanked the judge and proceeded, "Well as I was saying, I had just loaded Bessie, my favorite mule, into the trailer and was driving her down the highway when this huge semi-truck and trailer ran the stop sign and smacked my truck right in the side. I was thrown into one ditch and Bessie was thrown into the other. I was hurting real bad and didn't want to move. However, I could hear ole Bessie moaning and groaning. I knew she was in terrible shape just by her groans. Shortly after the accident a Highway Patrolman came on the scene. He could hear Bessie moaning
and groaning so he went over to her. After he looked at her he took out
his gun and shot her between the eyes. Then the Patrolman came across the
road with his gun in his hand and looked at me. He said, "your mule was
in such bad shape I had to shoot her. How are you feeling?"
