President's chat

* I do not know if everyone is aware that we are down to ONE minority elected official out of the 53 county elected officials we have in Tarrant County (See star-telegram 11/4/98). We all must reach out to other groups to determine how we are going to handle this increasingly disturbing trend. With reapportionment on the horizon and other crucial elections looming, the next year or two will be extremely important to us as TCBBA members and our constituents/clients. We must institute plans now to stop this alarming trend of dwindling minority representation of our elected officials. The time is now to build bridges to broaden our base of support. Remember the old expression, " if we are not at the table to help divide up the pie, we end with nothing but scraps."

In an attempt to focus in on the above trend and to discuss possible ways to stop this from happening in the future, we will host a judicial forum on our cable television show. As you should know from last month's newsletter, we have been asked to guest host a television show on TCI Cablevision, channel 13, entitled "Another Perspective". Our second taping is scheduled for December 2, 1998. Given the disturbing trend towards minority Judges losing in County wide Judicial elections, our second show will hopefully involve a forum of all minority Judges to discuss this trend, what they believe may be the cause of the trend, and what we as a community and a bar association, can do to reverse this disturbing trend. Our panel participants are tentatively scheduled to be Judge MaryEllen Hicks, Judge Clifford Davis, Judge Wayne Salvant, Judge Pete Perez and former Judge, Louis Sturns. I am the host.

*Plans have been finalized for the reception for Judge Sam Lindsay, the first ever African-American Federal Judge to be appointed in the Northern District of Texas. The reception is scheduled to be held at the City club, on November 19, 1998, from 5:00pm-7:00pm. This is a joint project sponsored by TCBBA and TCBA. Please contact Louis Sturns @817-561-9996 for further updates and directions.

LAWYER HUMOR

* Stupid Law suit of the month

In this suit, it was alleged that the widow of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. should be immediately arrested and detained.  The reason given was that Mrs. King had plans to "take over an order of Black Nuns and become its Mother Superior" which would lead to the completion of her master plan to "install herself as a self-declared Black Popeest". Windsor v. Pan American Airways, 744 F.2d 1187 (5th Cir. 1984).

The plaintiff further claimed that Mrs. King posed a threat to the Roman Catholic Church and its episcopacy.  The plaintiff claimed that he was doing all this to "foil St. Peter who was actually the Black Devil and the father of Judas Iscariot".  Folks, you just can't make stuff like this up.

THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO HMM!

* Why is it that democratic and republican minorities candidates are having so much difficulty winning countywide elections?

* Why is that the Ft. Worth "USA Café" has been accused of racial discrimination by a Ft. Worth police officer? Anyone else notice any hints of this?
