President's chat

* As we begin a new year we will hopefully have several projects in which everyone can participate; particularly since I know how much more work everyone is clamoring to undertake.

* To start with we are planning a reception for Judge Sam Lindsey, the first ever African-American Federal Judge to be appointed in the Northern District of Texas. It's about time! The reception tentatively is scheduled to be held at the Fort Worth club, some time in October, 1998, depending on the Judge's schedule. This is a joint project sponsored by TCBBA and TCBA. Judge Lindsey was sworn in on September 11, 1998 in Chief Federal Judge Buchmeyer's chambers. Please contact Louis Sturns @817-561-9996  for further updates. Donations are needed to help underwrite this historic event. If we are going to do it, let's do it right.

* Plans are also underway to hopefully institute an ongoing community program entitled "The People's Law School". This is an informative program presented by lawyers from TCBBA (possibly in conjunction with JL Turner) to give the public (non lawyers) nuts and bolts basic rights in areas of the law that non lawyers encounter. Example Torts, landlord-tenant rights, criminal law, family law etc. This event is tentatively scheduled for the Spring of 1999. Volunteers and panel participants are needed, please contact Jackie Robinson  at 817- 877-4800 or email= jrobinson@GwinnRoby.com for details.

* Will we ever get 501 (c) tax exempt status?

* Do we want to have a Christmas party this year?  We need to make reservations and plans now if we want this to come off smoothly.

* We have a Web site! Our newsletters will be posted on our web page as released (hopefully monthly). Our web page can be accessed over the internet at https://home.swbell.net/qdcg. Check it out. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also our directory of members can be accessed from our Web site and we have included several web links to other relevant sites. Isn't technology great. Call Douglas Greene @ 978-2753 or Qdcg@swbell.net if you have your own web site address to link with ours. To update the directory with your e-mail address please contact Marla Lee @ 348-7525 or LeeM@Commcredit.com

* For all you people in need of CLE, please contact Theresa Austin, to help her schedule the CLE lectures.

* We also look forward to the continued success of our x-mas play and the rally for education. Keep up the good work Bobbie. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. Please remember that we as lawyers have an obligation to assist the next generation to stand on our shoulders and be the lawyers of the future.

* I hope through our officer's hard work and your input this year, we can have another successful year. Remember if all the parts do not function the engine does not work. Thanks for all your anticipated help in the upcoming year.

On behalf of this years officers, I look forward to working with you and for you throughout the year to make this year another productive year for TCBBA.

LAWYER HUMOR

*Carlson was charged with stealing a Mercedes Benz, and after a long
trial, the jury acquitted him. Later that day Carlson came back to the judge who had presided at the hearing. "Your honor," he said, "I wanna get out a warrant for that dirty lawyer of mine." "Why ?" asked the judge. "He won your acquittal. Why do you want to have him arrested?" "Well, your honor," replied Carlson, "I didn't have the money to pay his fee, so he went and took the car I stole." (A true story)

*A newly established lawyer, wanting to impress the first client coming into his office, picked up the phone and said, "I'm sorry, but I have a tremendous case load and won't be able to look into this for at least a month." He then hung up,
turned to the young man in his office and
asked, "What can I do for you, sir?" "Nothing," replied the young man. "I'm just here to hook up your phone."
