Some notes on playing
Fred McDowell played with a glass
slide on his middle finger that went from his knuckle to his finger tip.
He also used his bare hands in picking the notes. I use a thumb pick
and slide on my index finger to play the slide guitar. It also helps
to grow out your fingernails a tad. If you are just starting out
playing finger picking blues I would suggest starting with the "the girl
I love" it can even be played with a pick if so desired. "Fred's
worried live blues" is a good song to start with to because it has a monotonic
bass line, but requires good slide guitar playing. Most important
DO NOT try to play this stuff note for note, just get the melody down and
make up the rest.
