20. John Thomas Jefferson Culpepper was born on 9 Aug 1827 in Monroe Co, GA. He appeared on the census in 1830 in Talbot Co., GA. He appeared on the census in 1840 in Chambers Co., AL. He appeared on the census in 1850 in Marshall Co., MS. He died on 1 Aug 1902 in Lavaca Co., TX. He served in the military Civil War in Terry's Texas Rangers, 8th Texas Cavalry. John Thomas Jefferson Culpepper was one of the 117 Confederate soldiers in the unit known as "Terry's Texas Rangers, Company F, 8th Texas Cavalry" led by Col. Benjamin F. Terry and Lt. Co. Tom Lubbock, mustered in Houston on 9 Sept 1861. Company F was first assigned to the command of C. S. General Albert Sydney Johnston, headquartered at Nashville, TN. After Johnston's death at the Battle of Shiloh, 1862, Company F was transferred to Generals Braxton Bragg, then Joseph Johnston, John Bell Hood, Nathan Bedford Forrest, and for the last two years of the war, Joseph Wheeler. Of the 117 men in the company, 36 died during the war.

Terry fell in the Rangers first battle at Woodsonville, KY on 17 Dec 1861. Lubbock, ill at the time, was advanced to command, but died before he could take charge. They surrendered to General Sherman at Greensboro, NC, on 28 Apr 1865.

JTJ Culpepper named his youngest son after Terry and Wheeler. He was a Stockman. He was buried in Mt. Olive Cemetery. He was married to Cynthia Ann Guthrie on 24 Jan 1855 in Lavaca Co., TX.
