Summer Vacation 2003

Texas Hill Country

Ben came in for his summer visit, from his home in Tennessee.  We had an excellent time!!!!!  Here are some of our "Adventures".

We headed out to the Hill Country, via the "back way" to stretch the Boxster's legs.  Our drive took us over "the Devil's Backbone".  A twisty road in route to our hosts, Cindy's aunt and uncle, Sue and Burleigh, in Boerne.

On our first day there, Ben wanted to see the Alamo.  He had studied the Alamo in school this past year, and wanted to see it in person.

After seeing all there is to see there, we walked around the Riverwalk, had a quick lunch, and headed back to Boerne.

Ben played a little with his new brother, Nicolas, then we headed out for "Old Tunnel Wildlife Management Area".  A unique little park, that hosts several million bats, who have taken over an old abandoned train tunnel.  At dusk, the park has an interactive program about the history of the tunnel, followed by the bats emerging for their nightly feeding.  Ben took lots of notes!  Did you know bats aren't really deaf, sleep 200-300 per sq ft, and that there are at least 32 species of bats in TX!?!?!

Here are some of the pictures we took (click to enlarge):

The next day was full of adventures.  First, we headed out for Stonehenge.  That's right, there is a replica of Stonehenge, right in the middle of the TX Hill Country!!!  Go here, for the "official" site.  By the way, you can "walk" over to Easter Island while you are there!

Next, we did a little spirited driving on some of the best roads in TX (at least for a Boxster).  One of the best is Ranch Road 336, toward Leakey (Lake - ee).  Dozens of tight twists and turns, up hills and down hills, around blind corners, etc.....(I had a little fun, myself!!!) Along the way, we spotted a totally white deer.   By the time we got the car turned around, he had moved off into the trees, and was about 200 yards away, so this picture isn't quite the best.  I don't know if there are albino deer, but this thing was as white as a ghost.  After a little more driving, we took a quick time out to look at the scenery, and snap a few more pictures.

As we were returning, we stopped at one of the many Guadalupe river crossings, to wade in the river and enjoy the scenery.

On the drive back just as we thought we had seen everything, we just happen to notice hidden in a strip center in Kerrville a shop called RB Motors.  We stopped in, and found some beautiful classic cars and hot rods.

Our next day was spent at Sea World-San Antonio.  Ben and I took in all the shows, and some of the water rides.  Ben got a little damp, I ended up soaked from head to toe........ :(

We arrived back a Sue and Burleigh's just in time for dinner.  They sat out a "picnic" for us, and Ben couldn't wait to get his hands on a juicy burger.

While we were relaxing after dinner, Ben decided he would jump into the hammock  Easier said than done ;)

On Ben's final day, a friend offered to let Ben try out his Rotax go-kart.  Mind you, these things aren't like the go-karts you find at Sears.  These things accelerate faster than you can imagine.  Ben had a blast.
