Cherokee D
Plan
downloaded from JimZ site. Decals also from JimZ. Paint purchased from Hobby Lobby.
All other supplies purchased from Hobbytown USA. Used plastic nose cone.
First
flight - Brad's place. Winds about 10mph, gusting to 20mph. Launched with D12-5.
Perfect flight, pitiful recovery. It flew like a dream. It was so windy, though,
the shock cord was ripped from the fin can at apogee. The fin can buried straight
down about 4 inches into the ground. No serious damage, but lots of mud to dig out.
Blake and I were by ourselves for this launch. We couldn't see the nose cone when
the ejection charge went off. Luckily, we finally saw it and were able to keep track
of it. It drifted about a half mile away, across the highway and about halfway into
this large field. We had to cross a barb wire fence. Blake didn't like that at all.
Second
flight - Brad's place. Winds about 10mph, gusting to 15mph. Launched with D12-5.
Perfect flight and recovery.
Third flight - Brad's place, 6/16/01. Winds about
5mph, gusting to 10mph. Decided to try launching with an E15-4T. The Aerotech launcher
wouldn't arm, so I took it apart and manually made the connection. I don't think
it was making strong enough contact, though. Burned up three igniters without igniting
the engine. So, we decided to get the small Estes launcher out and go with a D12-5.
Perfect launch, straight up into the sun. Don't know how high it went, but it was
way up there. Recovery wasn't as pretty, though. One of the shroud lines pulled loose
and so the parachute wasn't fully open. Came down pretty fast. Blake and I almost
got to it before it hit the ground, about 40 yards from the launch site. Luckily,
there wasn't any damage when it hit the ground though.
