Der Big Red Max
I
kit-bashed an Estes Screamin Mimi to build this, principally because the nose cone
and body tube is the same size as the original Der Big Red Max. The decals are from
Tango Papa. I got the templates for the fins from JimZ's site. Initially, I had
intended on using the whistles and extra fins from the Screamin Mimi kit and calling
it Der Big Screamin Red Max. Maybe next time. I put in 1/8 oz of clay into the
nose cone and then used JB-Weld to install a screw eye in the base of the nose cone,
and attached a 42 inch kevlar/elastic shock cord - used kevlar for the first 8 inches
attached to the shock cord mount with a loop formed in it right at the top of the
body tube, then attached the elastic shock cord to the loop then to the screw eye
in the nose cone. I modified the motor mount to allow use of the Estes E-9, so it
should be screamin' anyway. ;-) I even strengthened it with JB-Weld so I could fly
it with an Aerotech F-21 if desired (which was the reason for the extra nose weight).
I used RockSim to test it. It showed an altitude of almost 1,800 feet on the E-9.
I used 3/32 basswood for the fins, laminated them with printer paper, and used JB-Weld
for the fin fillets. The body tube and nose cone was filled, hobby putty for the
nose cone and Micro-Fill for the tube, and sanded smooth. I put on a coat of gray
Krylon primer, sanded, then put on a coat of Kilz, sanded, then another coat of Krylon
gray primer and sanded again before painting. The red paint is Krylon and the black
paint for the nose cone is Rustoleum. I messed up on a couple of the decals. It
was my first time to use the Tango Papa decals and they're a lot thinner than the
Estes decals. They lay really flat though and look like they're painted on. Very
nice, once I got used to them. Can't wait to fly it!
