Troop 1113 April Newsletter

The Past:

March turned out a great Spring Camporee. The weather was spectacular. The Burning Pistons, (AKA the Thundercats) did a great job! They placed 1st in orienteering, 2ndplace in the nature Kim’s Game and 3rd in first aid. A very special thanks goes to Doug Bohn, Brenda Bohn and Cathy Metcalf for conducting the Kim’s Game nature event. And a very very special thanks goes to Bob Osborne for making sure we got there. The scouts showed him their appreciation by learning to say Happy Birthday backwards! The scouts also helped Chris Decker with his Eagle Project at the Alief Youth Association baseball field by building a stairway to one of the score boxes. Good job Chris and company!

The Present:

Ahh, spring is here as well as April and it’s time for Enchanted Rock!! That’s April 4th thru the 6th, so I hope your plans are made and we will be sharing a campfire! As of press time we are trying to get an exact date for the Natetorium and some swimming fun and education. April 26th will bring the 1st ever Spring Scout Fair. We will be outdoors and doing what comes naturally! You guessed it, it’s cooking Dutch oven style. Summer camp payments are being taken for Horseshoe Bend, which is June 15th thru the 21st. The total cost for camp is $165; final payment is due by May 13th.

The Future:

We will be camping at El Rancho Cima for a service project weekend May 2nd thru the 4th. This is a great opportunity to visit camp before it gets here! We will be participating in the district’s annual food drive. Hey - and before you know it school will be out which means it’s time to start the summer off with our annual trip to Schlitterbaun.

SM Minutes:

This month you young Scouts are learning something about food and cooking and how to use recipes to whip up a tasty meal. I hope you're learning that following a recipe is vital to good cooking, unless you're satisfied with hot-dogs and hamburgers all the time in camp. You've probably found out that a pinch of salt, a dash of cinnamon, or a teaspoon of sugar makes all the difference. In fact, everything in the recipe has a reason for being there. Scouting is like a recipe for living. We call the ingredients our ideals - our Oath and Law, our motto, our slogan. You might say that Scouting's recipe for living calls for a cup of each of the 12 points of the Scout Law, a tablespoon of Good Turns, a heaping cup of duty to God and country, and a couple of dashes of duty to self - that is, physical, mental and moral fitness. Add a quart or two of fun. Mix well and you have good Scouting. But if we ignore one of the ingredients, the Scouting dish doesn't taste as good as it should. Let’s remember that for good Scouting, and a full satisfying life, each of Scouting's ingredients are important.

Yours in Scouting

Bobby Metcalf
