The Past:
January ended up being quite a month for the troop! We enjoyed all the tales of winter camp. We certainly would like to send our appreciation to the scout leaders who were available to take time out to attend. They were Roger Meredith, Brenda Bohn, Doug Bohn and a first timer, Mark Decker. Some arrowmen attended the annual Order of the Arrow banquet. The Hidden Sharks competed in the district first aid meet and earned 3rd place. Congratulations!! Also at the district dinner the troop received troop of the year!!! Congratulations and well deserved!!! Francis Ripper received the district award of merit and the Metcalf family received the family of the
year.The Present:
We have many events in February, so let’s stay focused and not wait until the last moment to decide that you wish to participate. Troop elections are to be conducted on the 5th, followed by patrol elections on the 12th. Originally we had scheduled the historic trail hike, but that has been changed to begin in March. At your PLC meeting last week you decided to go to Galveston Island State Park, the 15th thru the 17th. It will be an excellent time. The district merit badge fair will be held on Saturday the 23rd. Our court of honor will be held on the 26th along with ‘Friends of Scouting’.
The Future:
March will bring the district spring camporee to be held at Camp Strake, as well as OA spring fellowship. April will bring a campout to Guadalupe River State Park. Sign up now and reserve your spot with your $25 deposit for summer camp at Iron Wheel Mesa (June 16th thru the 22nd). Payment schedule for Emerald Bay is in progress. I strongly suggest you do not fall behind on those payments. See Bob Osborne for further questions.
A Note From The Committee Chairperson:
I have the following training information:
Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters – March 23rd and April 27th **
Outdoor Leader Skills – May 18th and 19th **
** Times and locations to be announced as they become available **
SM Minutes:
This month we'll have our big family night and court of honor, and I'm hoping that all your families will be here and have a great time. We only have a family activity once every three or four months, so it's a big deal for us when our parents, brothers and sisters join us at a court of honor or other event. But you know, every night should be family night for you.
Sound strange? Well I don't mean that the troop should meet every night and invite our families. What I do mean is that you should share some part of everyday with your families. Maybe just during the dinner hour or even 15 minutes over your homework. The point is that your family is the center of your life and will remain so until you're grown up and are leaving home, perhaps to start a new family.
If you have taken science at school, you may have seen this done. Take a small vial of mercury and put a glob of it on a piece of paper. Then take a knife and cut it up into three or four smaller globs. When you tilt the paper towards the center, the little globs will run together into a big glob again. A family is like that - two or three or four or more individuals who come together at times to make one whole. Make it a point to share some time with your family every day.
Yours in Scouting
Bobby Metcalf
