The Past:
February: We had an excellent campout at Galveston Island State Park. Kite flying conditions were excellent. There were many varieties of kites. Josh Sellers flew the highest kite. Johnny Ninh hooked an excellent flounder. A great campfire was had by all. Quite a few of the participants should have qualified for the polar bear club by taking a nice swim in the gulf. JR VanderWilt completed his eagle project. Troop Elections were held and congratulations are in order our new SPL is Michael Linder. Visit the troop website (
http://members.aol.com/troop1113/calendar.htm) to see all of the newly elected positions. Our semi annual court of honor had many surprises. The Rhino patrol brought fourth their patrol flag (many thanks to Scott Weaver; truly a work of art). Our FOS pledges were excellent. We had special recognitions for Mike Carr, Don Leo, Bob Osborne, Francis Ripper and Julie and Jon VanderWilt. Johnny Ninh received the `Outstanding Scout of the second half 1999’. Our second payment was made to Camp Rand Rand. The Present:
Patrol Elections will be held the 7th. There will also be a PLC meeting held immediately after that troop meeting. Steven Bohn’s eagle project will be Saturday, March 11th. It is at Bishop Fiorenza Park located at the corner of Alief Clodine & Eldridge. It will begin at 8:00 am until completed. He will be planting shrubs. OA Spring Fellowship will be from March 17th – thru the 19th. Pancake / donut Sunday is March 19th. Tatanka district spring camporee will held March 24th – 26th at Camp Brosig. Special note: all OA ordeal members that did their ordeal at Camp Strake last May will be eligible to complete their brotherhood at either spring fellowship or spring camporee. Final summer camp payment is due March 28th (to avoid a $25 late fee)
The Future:
Our family campout to enchanted Rock is just around the corner (April 7th – 9th ). See Joe Sellers for signup. OA ordeals and service will be May 5th thru the 7th at El Rancho Cima and May 12th – 13th at Camp Strake. And yes, Schlitterbahn (while staying @ Randolph AFB) is just around the corner (May 26th – 28th).
SM Minutes:
Scouts, when we go to our camporee, and later when we are in summer camp, let's remember that our campsite is our home. The living room is the area in front of your patrol site. Your patrol's cooking area is the kitchen and the patrol dining table is your dining room. The showers and latrine are your bathroom, and of course your tent is your bedroom. You wouldn't think of throwing candy wrappers onto your bedroom floor at home, or of leaving garbage in your dining room. And even if you did, your parents would soon get on your case about it. So whenever we're in camp, let's treat the campsite the way you treat your own home. Cleanliness and neatness are the marks of a good camper. In this troop, they are a standard rule.As Scouts, we have pledged ourselves to obey the Outdoor Code and our Wilderness Pledge, which call for us to "be clean in our outdoor manners". That certainly applies to our life at home in camp, as well as when we're on the trail. Let's make it a habit to keep a clean, neat home in camp.
Yours in Scouting
Bobby Metcalf
