Day 17, Friday, July 25, 2008 - 152 miles

Destination: Beaver Dam, WI – Before we left the Chestnut Mountain Resort, we had to work in an 18 hole round of miniature
golf. The game started out amicably enough with scores being very close on the first nine. Duane and Warren were tied at 24,
Peggy and Cathy at 25. By the second nine, things were getting pretty cutthroat and the competition was on. Cathy got style
points for her two, hole-in-one shots on the course. I [Warren] didn’t take any pictures as I was concentrating on winning.
Duane did the next to impossible by hitting the thin metal edge of a hazard and bouncing his ball backwards off the green. In
the end, Warren was the points leader with 42, Cathy a close second with 48, followed by Peggy with 50 and Duane with 52.
It is probably good that we are not trying to make a living as gold professionals because ALL of those are pitiful scores.

After golf, we did the Alpine Slide at the resort, by we, we don’t mean Cathy who chose to chicken out. It is kind of a luge type
ride down the hill and you ride the chairlift back up. What a blast! You are in control and if you let go, it will stop on it’s own.
No reason to be afraid (unless you are like Peggy and I and don’t like chairlifts…). If you get to do this, buy the unlimited pass.

Here are some people ahead of us going down and Peggy and Duane taking insurance photo’s before they take the plunge.
This also serves as your Cathy picture of the day, seen standing in the safe spot behind the rail. We then had to leave and get
moving down the road. It was time to see Galena since we had been there for two days. Galena is one of those very old towns
being all historical and full of historical shops with antiques, jewelry, art, food, what nots, this, that, the next thing, you get the
idea. Not really being a shopper, I went along and visited some of the stores choosing the bench option for some of the others.
It was OK but if I return, I will probably check out the museums and General Grant’s home and that kind of stuff. Things got
better when we broke for lunch at Durty Gurt’s Burger Joynt. That place was kind of fun!

I opted for the Mexican Olé Burger which had jalapenos on it. I also tried a cup of their “Gumbolaya” which had sausage,
chicken, okra and spices, etc. in a kind of best of both worlds soup. It was delicious! Actually, any place that plays Cajun music
and Zydeco plus some oldies while I’m eating might just garner my vote. Cathy and I had our picture taken with a likeness of
Gurt while we were waitin’ for our dinner. (This is your bonus Cathy picture.) When we left, we programmed the GPSs for
Beaver Dam, WI and hit the road. We have rooms at the Super 8 there.

I didn’t get a picture before dark of tonight’s lodging so I’m actually adding it at a later time. Before bedtime, we walked up to the
grocery store and bought some personal sized ice cream for fun. I still miss the Spearfish KOA…  Hey Levi! You’re still the man!
(See days 10 and 11 if you don’t get this reference.)

Tomorrow = Low miles and much fun. The 2nd Annual Fox Lake Open House / Family Reunion. Woo-hoo! Fun! Fun!
Good night. We’ll see you tomorrow.
